I was up in Big Bear this weekend for some wheeling. We ran Holcomb Creek then down Dishpan Springs. After eating lunch and cooling off in the creek, we reversed the trail. I had just cleaned the waterfall and the front drivers wheel dropped into a hole and that's all she wrote. :frown:

Now I have to figure out what I'm gonna do with it. Just top it and put in a roll cage or cut and replace the top with a donor top. Either way, lots of work ahead.

Here's a link to the pictures:

Edit: Removed the link and posted the pictures on page 2

My 80 Always Gets Me Home

After we winched her back on her feet and up to a level spot, I tried to crank it over but it immediately seized. i pulled the plugs, cranked it over again, and blew about a quart of oil out of cylinder number 5. I replaced the plugs and it fired right up. We drove the 25 miles back to camp with no issues other than burning out the oil for the first 5 minutes. Back at camp, I looked her over, cleaned up all the broken glass, and duct taped the sides of the windshield for the long drive home. We stayed the night and left the next morning. To play it safe, I had Mike (80BajaBound) tow my tear drop (Thanks so much!!!). We made the drive home without any stops or any problems. It's amazing how tough these rigs are!

Here are a few more pics sitting in my driveway.

Here I am still complaining about a dented door from an off camber situation from 2006. On which one to do - whatever your wallet dictates! Good luck.

Oh by the way, I'm in need of those caps that cover the screws on the roof grab handles. If you don't need them...thanks.

Sorry to hear about ur rig Glad to hear you made it home ok. The rig would look great with just a cage. Jus my two cents.

Sorry to hear about that. With the style of wheeling you do, a chop top with cage may make sense. Of course it would be less family friendly.

Go get a top. I'll help you weld it back on.

Derrick, when are you going to stop babying that thing and actually wheel it? Seriously though, I'm glad you are okay and the Cruiser brought you home safely!

I still have our '97 that we rolled multiple times and still runs. I am wanting to eventually yank the body and tube cage it up for a crawler to have fun with. I'm going to leave my current '95 as an Expo rig.

Good news, is that you have options and whichever route you go you'll be happy with. Most importantly, glad you are okay!

Glad you're okay......!

Glad you guys are ok Derrick.

Sucks! Glad you are ok!!

Ouch!!!!!

I don't think that will buff out this time. Glad you are OK.

Convertible with a cage and no doors would be sweet. Sorry to see she flopped. You have done one hell of a job fixing the body damage in the past. Look forward to seeing whatever you come up with.

Ih8 snapfish...

I agree with Newps, caged, tube doors and bikini topped would be cool. Bobbed, dove tailed and an LS2 would be amazing!

that sucks, but I'm glad you're OK

Glad you're ok Derrick!

We were just there last weekend on the motos and even the bikes were looping it going up through there. The vehicles were pulling wheels left and right. That obstacle has sure gotten harder in recent years.

Most drivers hang a left and curl around that fall.

Derrick,

Sorry to hear about the flop, glad you're okay. I saw you leaving town on Friday and was going to send you a note saying that the rig and trailer looked great. Hope I didn't jinx it.

I vote for cage, half doors, and soft-top. If you're going to cut the top to replace it you're already halfway there... I would advise taking it to a boat shop to have the top done it you decide to go that route.

Here's the beginning of a different project exo my little bro is currently working on...

Derrick,
I know a great place to get DOM for a sweet cage. He might even give you that s***.......
Nice flop. If you decide to re-roof it, I might be getting a 95 to part out. You can have that roof....

Glad you guys are ok Derrick.
Thanks!

WOW Derrick! You done did it good this time....
Was your son with you for this flop? Luck the windshield didn't blow so you could drive it home. Bet you got quite a few looks on the freeway!

Sent from my iPhone using IH8MUD App
Actually my daughter and older son were with me, they thought it was fun, like a Del Mar Fair ride. Luckily, only the top of the windshield was blown out and the side cracked. Nothing a little duct tape couldn't handle :hillbilly:

Sucks! Glad you are ok!!
Thanks Brent!

Ouch!!!!!

Thanks Dan! It won't buff out this time, but with the help with a sawzall, it'll look good again, although different.

Convertible with tube doors is the plan right now.

Ih8 snapfish... Is the link not working? I can re-size and post the pics, let me know.

All of the above, except the LS2, for now :D

that sucks, but I'm glad you're OK
Thanks!

Yes, it has gotten worse. This was my 4th time climbing the waterfall. I think my overconfidence affected the line I chose. I learned a great lesson, the trail will be different every time you run it. Run it like it is your first time.

Pat, I will definitely be calling you about some DOM for a cage. I am glad I was lazy about the other tube I had planned on purchasing from you. That project would have been tweaked by this mistake. My new job had kept me from starting that one.

Thanks everyone for the comments. My kids and I were perfectly fine as this was a slow motion flop. As in the past, I won't let this stop me from doing what I enjoy, and that is wheeling the heck out of this rig. It never ceases to amaze me with the abuse that it takes and still gets me home.

I found a picture of what I might do, but I will add tube doors:
