Fuel economy - BJ70/BJ60?

To those that may have one:
What kind of fuel economy could I expect from a bj70 or bj60? I am thinking about getting one, mainly for Highway commuting. Also, what could I expect with an aftermarket turbo?

BJ70 is 600 lbs lighter and will yield slightly better mileage. Both are capable of 25 MP (US) Gal. Neither will get that mileage reliably unless they are kept stock and run under 60 mph.

Turbo doesn't really effect mileage much (if you drive the same speeds) but will help you mainatin highway speeds on slopes.

yup don't push it. 10.7 litres per 100 kms highway. thats my average.. heavy foot, it will fall.

in city with max accel, etc. it drops quickly. like all vehicles I guess

1982 BJ60, 290K KM, H42, stock gearing, 235-75-15 tires.

Averaged 27.2 M/USG during 4 years of 50 mile/day freeway commuting.

88fj62 converted to bj /h55f , 4:11 gears , 235/75/15 , 480,000 km , 28.8 mpg imp. cruising at 65mph / 2650-2700 rpm with a/c on . 33's going on this summer so hope it will improve by droping rpm's a little .

Reviving from the depths...

We sold a 13BT core to a fellow a while back. Head rebuilt, rings, hone, injectors rebuilt, beb's for a freshen up.

It went into a firewall converted HJ61 chassis. I think it is 3.70 and 30" tires, but not sure of these last two points.

He reported to me the other day he (or rather his wife) is averaging 9.5L per 100kms.

Thats 24.75us-mpg and 29.73ipmg.

Not bad. Ohhh, and this truck is scheduled to be at Cruiser Days.

wow this is an old thread. Moose hadn't even gone thru his injector pains yet!!!!

After reading my original post I decided to edit it. I didn't agree with my original post. Can you imagine if you went thru and cleaned up all your crap original posts how long it would take?????

lol!

You ain;t kidding...I read this going...who the hell wrote this?..Oh me!...wow that's old.

I now average 24-26mpg after the injector rebuild, but I climb from sea-level to 600feet and back to get to the city.

Can you tell me about the Racor heated fuel filter? Why you installed this? Does it run off of 24V? Benefits? Cost? Thanks.

I installed it because I wanted to guarantee clean dry fuel, I spent a lot of money fixing bad injectors and wanted to protect them.

I have the RACOR 690, with 24volt heater and water bowl level sensor. The heater is useless here on the coast, but would be handy up north in the winter to prevent gelling.

I got it cheap on eBay, something like 60USD. They are expensive though.

Just came back from a 2-day trip to the Okanagan. BJ74 fully loaded with camping and fishing gear for two people, including an 8' pram on the roof rack, and driving a very steep high mountainous highway (Coquihalla), I managed 19.41 US MPG.

BJ70 = 90L fuel tank

I normally get between 24 and 26 MPG (imperial). That's about 20-22 mpg US, 11 litres per 100 km. I check on every fill.

I have auto trans and 411s as well.

crazy enough I seen an ad for a Chrysler Grand Caravan, the fuel consumption was rated at 8.5 liters/100km highway and 12.5liters/ 100kms city.

thats pretty damm good for a van with a v6. now with the fuel prices of diesel going as high or higher than gas, you might not see the cost advantage with some vehicles. ya ya I know, they could build a diesel van that gets 5l/100kms but there isn't one now.

And I know a BJ60 and FJ60 have a huge difference in fuel consumption too. so I ain't getting rid of my BJ and trading it for a gas pot.

Hey those vans are cool; are parts going to be hard to come by. I don't see alot of the mitsu's up here in Canada. How many horses does that engine put out? My ears are perking up! What are propane options for the minivan?

yes, the PI is available for that van.
horse power is a wopping 85 hp...
cheers
