My 80 was making a loud clunk noise from the driver side wheel during sharper turns and this morning when I went into reverse the same wheel locked up. I parked uphill and went into neutral and when I rolled back, same thing. The wheel would lock up, then you could hear it pop, then roll back (then it kept repeating this). I ruled out any tranny issues because it happens in N and R, and wanted to see if anyone has advise before I rebuild the diff. Any advise is appreciated.

What is the history of your axles? Ever have them apart to do the seals? Could be time. The birfield joints could be going or already bad.

Another pair of ears may tell you location of the problem. Diff or Birf.

Check your brake caliper. May have lost a bolt in it and the caliper is binding against the wheel.

I did the Birfs and wheel bearings about 6 months ago, planning to pull it apart to check the entire axle.

We as mentioned, Start with the caliper bolts. Your description matches symptoms spot on. I’d wager upper one from happening in reverse.
