I've searched the FAQs and a did general thread search, but like U2 I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

Specifically, it would be nice to have a detailed breakdown of the difference in frames over the years. I know at some point the rear crossmember was changed for different tail-lights and I think the middle noodely crossmember was also changed at some point.

Also, it would be awesome to have some info about what common mods are made to the frame to account for different common drivetrains (like why the PO of mine sawed out the middle noodle crossmember, and added a different crossmember further towards the front and underneath the frame - perhaps it was in the way of whatever they were running?).

Thanks for any help you can provide in this regard. I think this info would help those of us that are trying to piece a frankencruiser together from various years and in unmodifying what previous owners did.

This is all I have…

I cut out mine to get the assembly out much easier and less time consuming… then welded it back in… many reasons to have out that member … POs do the darndest things

There were many subtle changes in frames too numerous to spell all out … factor in market differences and CKD assemblies there are a lot of differences

Usually 25’s u can use on any 25
Early 40’s on early 40’s
Later 40’s on later 40’s

The big hack is most commonly the Sag conversion on the front frame section and shackle reversal

Btw don’t try to understand the mind of a PO … one day the PO will be you :meh:

Fairey over drive on a 4spd transmission pre split xfer case required removal or relocation of that crossmember

So if i'm putting a 2f/4-speed on a pre-1972 frame, I will need to relocate the crossmember? If it matters, I haven't decided if I'm going with the 3-speed transfer case or the 4-speed transfer case yet.

No idea

I had to do it on a 76 frame when I added a fairey overdrive years back

I was going to do the 4 sp with the 3sp's transfer case to get that 1/2 gear lower. Still might have most of parts.

I installed a H42 in my 68 FJ40 over thirty years ago. Never touched the torque tube behind the transfer case. It is a tight fit. I lowered the back of the engine to install it. I shimmed the front motor mounts. But that was for some clearance for the transfer case where it was close to the tub at the back of the transmission cover. 9/72 the tub changed to allow for the longer four speed. The torque tube designed changed 9/72 as well. Pretty sure it was also moved back a little at the same time.

The Fairey OD for the one piece transfer is suppose to work in the FJ40 until 1/79 with the fuel tank relocated and tub changes. Might have to pull the engine, transmission and transfer case to install but it should fit Infront of the torque tube.
