diesel to a gasser?

depends, what is your budget?

do you want to invest in a dated engine that you will be having problems getting parts for?
do you want to invest in a newer engine but that is going to cost you twice what you paid for the truck, if not more?
do you want to stay Toyota or go domestic?
what kind of tranny do you want to run?
do you want to end up changing engine, tranny and t/case and then the rear diff as well?
how far do you want to go?

you need to think this through completely before heading down this road. i do custom diesel swaps for a living and they are NOT cheap done right.

answer the questions above and lets proceed.

^This.

If the budget's too high, then sell the truck to somebody who will coddle it, and would rather die a horrible death than butcher it, and get a hundy.

Or just get used to being slow.

I thought about engine swaps when I got The Mule, but dang if that slug of a 22R didn't grow on me. I ended up just slapping "too Slow? Too bad!" on my tailgate, and take my time now.

I love my troopie camper but I would be willing to trade you for yours. Yours I can put a bigger camper on and be set..I don''t want to butcher mine..here are some pics and I PMd you with my cell

...what engines have the same mounts as the H?

WOW, that was very thoughtful.

The "problem" is, I love this truck. I've totally restored it with a whole bunch of goodies that make it perfect for taking my family and a few of their friends (7 of us) up in the mountains for 3- night camping trips.

But seriously, thank you!

Frankly, I've been reinspired to get this done (I suppose this year I'll just use the H again and make sure I complete the swap for next year).

With that said; having an H in there now at the H55 5 speed, which of the Toyota diesels (that I would want to consider)

fit the H mounts?

does someone have a list in order of HP and torque?

Thanks guys, I'll be sure and do a swap thread.

Cheers!

Eddie

try John at Radd Cruisers ...
he might have one or a core you can rebuild ...
tell him Crushers sent yah.

are G&S still about?
Their website is down, but they were a reliable source of parts.

Greg and Sheldon, from what i know, are still in business but in a much more relaxed position. if they have the parts then, yes, they sell ONLY quality parts. i recieved a diff and a windshield frame from them recently.
i do think they are leaning towards quality diesel swaps now.

That makes sense. If memory serves Greg's a Firefighter, and Sheldon's a Railroad Engineer, and were running the cruiser parts business on the side.
I hope the new arrangement works for them, and the few dealings with one of them, "70'sGuy" was good. They sell fine equipment.

I have a couple of questions

1st what kind of spacers are you using on the front axle with those wheels? Is that a disc or drum axle? I have a couple of sets of those wheels and plan one using them since the time period they came out is pretty close to when the 40 series was still around.

2nd you are hauling seven poeple around on the highway in a pickup? Or are you all jumping in once your off road. Just something I would think a troopy was better suited to do.

..."Living in the past..." I'll check with the PO on the spacer. it has one but I'm not sure where he got it from. Next time I am with the truck, I'll measure the width; disks on rear and drums on front. The trailhead is a few miles from our place, (going from 6000' to 9000'...) so the back is loaded down. If we drive to farther places, we take two vehicles to the trailhead.

Group, what's the thought if i were to keep a Toyota diesel but one that required frame mod (say a 1HD-T) as opposed to a 12HT (that requires no mod). Would that decrease the value?

What if I swapped with a Cummings? (retain value or reduce?)

Thanks guys,

Eddie

Any kind of engine conversion would mean a loss of collectible value, but an increase in price potential on resale for the labor and parts involved.

I like the Cummins idea, all the way up to the transmission limitations: for a stick, a Cummins means your prominant choice is the NV4500, which, in my opinion, is the most over-hyped, poorly-geared sad sack of a 5-speed on the planet. I don't even consider it a legit 5-speed because the first is so low, you'll end up skipping it and using 2-5 for road driving: which means you'll pay 5-speed prices for a 4-speed.
They may have adapters for the Cummins to an H55, but I'm skeptical, and they may have adapters to a BW box, but prices would be 1-2 times the cost of the motor alone.

Personally, if I were to do this, I'd pursue a 1HD, or 12HT, they're smoother, quieter motors, they trade off the Cummin's brute force for greater finese. I would rather the 12HT for its inline IP as opposed to a rotary, but, as long as you watch the rotary IP on the 1HD like a hawk, that motor will blow the doors off any other I6 toyota's ever made in terms of economy and power.

Eddie, I have an H engine in mine and it's slow as hell but once it gets going...does just fine on the highway. I got used to it I guess. It's real happy at 65mph w/33's. About the only other gripe is, it really needs a fith gear. These engines were not designed to install turbos on them but people do it anyways. If it's a tired engine, turbo'ing it would be out out of the question. My advise is keep driving until you find a 12ht, easy to install but has more wires to deal with from what I hear. I think I will be going this route when mine dies. The only other option I would consider is the 1hz but will need a lot more work to get it done right. Good Luck

12HT is just as simple as the 2H or H engine, no fancy wiring.
go to push button glow and you are golden.

Found a 12HT so we are golden! (thanks to an IH8MUD guy!) I'll be sure and do a swap thread.

Anyone know of one here already? I searched and found one that looks like it may be in progress but either the posting slowed or the project did.'

Anyhow, I'm pumped.

Would this also be a good time to install power steering? (the non-powered is pretty tough when negotiating tight trail turns and an 8000' drop off on one side! )

Cheers all and Happy Easter.

Eddie

Me too. Very cool!

Yes. Definitely install Power Steering now if you plan on installing it ever. My vote would be to add 60 series PS, but that involves welding on the frame, an cutting an inner fender. You may not be up for that. Mini PS would be nearly bolt in (read up in the 40 section about the different options you have). either way, you'll be fabricating PS lines, which really isn't a big deal.

There are no 8,000' drop offs in Colorado. Physically impossible. But it sure feels like it sometimes, eh?

Dan

My strongest vote is for the 60-series PS, that's a killer setup, but the Mini is good so long as you don't go bigger than 33's.

Been running the mini setup in my DD RN38 (stock) and it's great, tighetst turning radius I've ever seen.
