Use copious amounts grease on your drill. The grease will catch the swarf if you drill slowly, clean, re-grease. Use the same method on the thread tap and you'll be sweet. What little (if any) swarf/fillings that get into the manifold won't do the turbine any harm.

Go back to page 2 and post 40 for what I did that worked real good. Basically what dousty is saying, except that I also started the motor when I estimated the drill bit was about to break through to the interior.

No worries, I took the time to loosen up the turbo, and get a thin plastic sheet in between the manifold and turbo. I was suprised at how thin the manifold was at this point, maybe 3-4mm...
Blew the little shavings out with air.

Now bolting everything back up and fill new coolant. Even though the old one was crystal clear :)
(It's going into the earthmover, I'm not that rich)

Tonight I'll take her for a spin to log the temperatures with stock fuel and boost.

I'm fairly new to diesel cruisers too. I just fixed an electrical issue today that I've been chasing for a month. The reason I'm posting here is that the fix brought my turbo to life and my HJ61's 12HT CAME TO LIFE. When I got my HJ61 last Oct. I knew jack about cruisers. My turbo indicator light was always showing amber/orange the only time the green light came on was at ignition. My electrical prob. was the battery light, ATF light and both turbo light were staying on and the voltmeter would rise all the way up with the RPM's of the engine. After changing out my external voltage regulator, which everything was pointing to and what a lot of people were saying it was, the problem persisted. I started chasing shorts, all the grounds tested good, finally I checked my old VR with a meter and it tested fine, I tested the new VR and it tested fine. So I hooked up the old VR and adjusted the relay side all the lights including the orange/amber turbo light went out and the in dash voltmeter went back to the normal range. I revved the engine and the turbo which I could hear with the hood open engaged. I tightened everything down and went around the block up some steep hills and the difference was amazing. so maybe your VR in on its way to going out and that could be the issue. What do you turbo lights do?

How would your voltage regulator affect power output? I'm real happy to hear you figured out your issue, but I'm drawing a blank at how the 2 things would be related.

By the way do you have belt #s? All 3 of my belts are on the verge of needing to be replaced, I've got Mitsuboshi (not Mitsubishi) belts and I've got the belt #'s but I can't even find em on the Mitsuboshi web site or anywhere else. Just wondering if you knew your brand and #s.
by the way I have the full toyota tech manual for the 12ht, that where I came across this in search of belt info.
Thanks,
Rob
