Hello Diesel Master Mechanics. I am the proud owner of a sweet 1980 BJ-44 that I drove from Vancouver to San Diego. (great drive by the way Oregon and Washington are beautiful ;p took highway 1 by the Ocean a good bit of the drive) anyway. I love the truck but am experiencing a great deal of oil consumption. It runs and drive great without any smoke but burns about a quart of oil every 500. miles. It does have some blow by :crybaby: if I place my hand over the oil fill hole and some oil is dripping out of the breather. Question 1 how do I determine if it is rings or valve seals? I am guessing a compression test. Question 2 anyone know where to look for parts for a 2B Diesel engine it was a Japan only vehicle?
Question 3 do you guys think it could be a problem if I just keep feeding it oil and driving it? The oil is not that big of a deal and it made it here from Canada, but am I taking a chance of complete engine failure if I keep driving it. It has plenty of get up (compression) and it does not smoke?? Any advise or wisdom apprecieted :grinpimp:

A couple of questions. Does the BJ44 have the low oil pressure shutoff like the Canadian BJ60's? If so it will help to keep you from running dry. Is it burning the oil or is it leaking out of a seal or gasket somewhere? Those are your only two options (I can't imagine losing a quart every 500 miles out the blow by pipe). Engine parts are available from Geoff Walsh Engine parts in Australia.
How do you know it has good compression unless you've done a compression test?

The oil is possibly going out the exhaust pipe. Sometimes its hard to see smoke when your driving
Diesels naturally drink more oil than a gasser, a fact:D
Even brand new diesels drink oil heavily under full load for extended times

Usually a wet and dry compression test will tell you if its rings or valves.
If its got miles consider a complete rebuild from the start
Get yourself a manual, any kind will do for starters but a FSM is best.

Diesels will keep going for a long long time if you put oil in them but it will get expensive after a while.
Just make sure the oil pressure is ok.
Keep them cool and dont drive them too hard

Use the time to study up on B diesels. You will find they are one of the most common 4 cyl diesels ever made and the parts availabilty outside NA is enormous if you know where to look.

Of course a 44 series engine bay will also take a 6 cyl diesel with some knowhow.
The 45 and 47 have a similar engine bays and came fitted with 6 cyl H diesels

And we want some pics:D

The 2B diesel was installed in very few markets. Mostly Japan and a few other Pan-asian countries. Most places had the B and then the 3B--completely skipping over the 2B. Check with Marv Spector at Specter Off-Road and I'm certain that he can get you any rebuild parts you might need. And he's just up the road from you in the LA area. I believe he still has a complete 2B engine/tranny/transfer combo for sale--if you must replace yours. Good luck!

a litre every 500 miles?!? that is a lot.
i would fine out where it is leaking/using and then contact the importer and see what he will do about the problem. there ae laws in effect that are enforcable over the border.
cheers

I agree with this for tractors etc, but as far as my 3b goes, I have never seen the dipstick go down even the slightest little bit! It maybe because it is all broke it perfect, I dunno

My BJ60 generally doesn't use oil but occasionally when it's working hard it will use a bit and that's with 440,000km on the clock!!

there ya go, I think a cheap, less hassle route would be to drive it for a while until you feel it needs a new motor, then buy a complete 3b or 13-bt from around your area

My deisel doesn't burn any oil off. Oil consumption for me only comes because of the need to change regularly, not for need to add between changes. It IS a fact that deisels need oil changes more importantly than gassers, but not because of losing any.

A liter of oil lost every 500 miles is way too much and probably your final warning. Check your radiator water, your exhaust, wherever you thing that oil might have gone. Check your driveway for oil stains. If your engine is still giving you a good pull, find that loss before the problem becomes bigger.

thanks guys

Talked to Marv and he checked it out, thinks it is the rings. The cruiser is getting all the rust cut out and some metal surgery while I wait for the parts. How do you download pictures? Just drag them into this box?? The oil is coming out of the breather tube on the side of the engine. I put in some pure Patrolieum stuff that slows leaks and it seemed to help a lot. I appreceite the feedback. Cheers

when I bought my 2H it have 2 huge problems .. oil comsumption of course ..

Bad oil rings and bad real oil seal .. off course you can saw in my bell housing a lost of oil. After a proper over haull, actualli my 2H have no ( nothing ) cosumption of oil between changes.

Tapage

Tapage did you just do the rings or a complete overhaul? I am considering just doing the rings so I should need rings, head gasket, rocker cover gasket, exhaust gasket? anything else?

When you are into it that far why go halfway? All you are saving is sleeves (assuming that the 2B is sleeved like the 3B) and pistons and associated machining. You may end up paying as much for individual parts as you would for an entire rebuild kit.

My 2H has been drinking alot of oil as well lately and experiencing high temps. I have put a new t-stat in, flushed and burped the cooling system and I still get high temps.
I'm thinking that the cause is not in the cooling system, but maybe something in the engine? Like addict, I am also getting some oil coming out of the breather, but I don't seem to have any blow by. It also seems to be leaking oil from somewhere near the rear of the exhaust manifold, I guess that could be the head gasket, between the firewall and engine, right? I followed the dripping oil up from the bellhousing (originally thought it was the rear oil seal but just replaced the clutch and it wasn't leaking there) and it seems to be coming from somewhere above where the bellhousing and engine meet. The higher temps could be caused by bad rings, gasket, etc... right? (Forget the fact that I only have the original temp gauge) I guess it's off to have a compression test done, before anything gets worse!
Does anyone know of a good place near Chicago to buy parts? My wife is in the states right now and I thought I could order some things and have it sent to where she is staying. Original parts are not only expensive here, but usually need to be ordered which adds a month at least to any project!

Specifically I'm looking for someone that would carry a complete rebuild kit for a 2H as well as a few other 2H related items. My wife is leaving on Monday, so I don't know if I'll really be able to get this done- just an idea.

You won't find it in the states that fast. Try Geoff Walsh Engine parts in Australia. It's not OEM but I've used them and so far it seems fine.

That looks like a decent rebuild kit because it is OEM....
But there are some 2H rebuild kits being sold as "quality aftermarket"
Pistons are Tiawan. My brother bought two rebuild kits to rebuild two different engines. On both of them the rings got stuck in the ring lands within a years time. The pistons distorted.
