First off you should post in the "Diesel" forum. You have a better chance at getting help there.

Hey guys just looking for some pointers. I am looking at an 85 60 series with a transplanted 1 HZ and drivetrain from Guatamala what types of things should I check w? the engine to make sure it's sturdy? Really looking to run biodiesel also? Does this engine have a good injector for VEg?:grinpimp:

From Guatemala huh.
I have been to Guatemala and seen thier trucks.
I would CHECK EVERYTHING before buying it.

For the most part they pound their trucks and do no maintenance.
The average philosophy is, abuse it, do no maintenance, and when it breaks fix it as cheap as possible. repeat proccess...

It amazing the trucks there last as long as they do. A true testament to LC over engineering.

Here are a few examples of what is common down there:

1. If you don't have the right tool, improvise. IE: Don't have the right size socket. Just grab a hammer and chisel and pound the nut off. To put back on repeat in opposite direction

2. Your missing 3 lug nuts. Thats okay, there is still 3 holding it on. (Not kidding about this. I WISH I WAS.) They don't even make a triangle with the remaining three. They just put them on in a row.

3. They don't use turn signals or replace burnt out lights because it draws to much power and is bad for the engine. WHAT THE HECK??? They don't do maintaince, and they 'fix' everything as cheap as possible, and the somehow think that by not using lights they are saving the engine???? Explain that!

4. If the brake line is leaking, they wrap it with electrical tape!! Yeah it might stop leaking for a few days, but its NOT SAFE!!

5. Air filters somehow hurt the engine so they don't use em!

6. If tires are not down to the fabric they are still good. If your axles shaft is bent really bad, who cares. It still turns right??

7. The engine does not run right. Must be that stupid EFI. Rip it off and put a carb on there. They work better you know.... They will do this to new cars!

8. For body work, just cover it with bondo, sand and repaint. No need to fix the dent or anything. And while they are at it the just skim the WHOLE car, so its an even coat!

These are just some examples, they go on and on...
I am sure cruiser_guy will chime in with more. He lives in Mixco Guatemala, and sees this all the time. He is restoring a 45LV right now, and he could tell you stories that would make you squirm.

My advise: Personally inspect the truck, and LOOK AT EVERYTHING!!
Other than that, the Guatemalan roads are really rough.
You will probably have to replace the suspension right away. If thats it, consider yourself lucky.

If you look at buying a 80 or 100 series, you would be in a better boat. Most of the people down there that can afford a 80 or 100, can afford the maintenance and proper repairs. A 60 series is more likely to be in the hands of a fool. But that does not mean the mechanic working on the 80 or 100 series know what they are doing, or cares.

Sorry for the long post.
I just wanted to warn you.
Cheers and good luck.
Nick

By the way, if there is any welding on the frame. RUN AWAY. Don't walk, run!

I did not see a proper bead when I was down there. They bubble-gum/popcorn weld everything. Its all just tack-welds over tack-welds. Most of the welds have no bite either.

Pretty scary when your in a building built like that.

Cruiser_guy and I did some MIG welding when I was down there. We did a fair bit. Used about 3.5lbs of wire. Some of my welds looked good, some looked bad, and some just plain sucked. The welder kept getting too hot (blowing holes) and then dropping temp (no bite), and the wire kept coming out in shots, no steady speed.

I knew it was power related. So I looked at the job site power line. It was 70 amp service which ran underground for 40 feet. Came out of the ground with 2 wires (not 3) in about 12 gauge stranded. From there it was stuck though the holes on the plug on a 100-ft long 18-gauge cord, and then wrapped with masking tape.

That line the feed the whole job site. I was welding off it. Chop saws were running. Angle grinders, drills, saws etc... No wonder my welds were so bad.

The next day when we went back with a multi meter to measure the voltage swing. The low was 80-volts and the high was 132v. Average was 90-125.

Sorry I am just trying to illustrate some of the problems down there. Even those that know what they are doing just don't have the right tools, and if they do, why do it right when they can just scrape by, and get away with it.
Hardly anything is ever fixed or built right. Some of it is thier fault, and some is bad conditions and tools.
But all this spells possible bad news for you. Please beware.

Cheers,
Nick

I agree with Tapage "very poor maintenance".
I was in Guate for 2 weeks, but I could of written a book about everything I saw (or heard about) that was wrong. These was only a few quick examples that came to mind.

Please dieselcruzn, I urge you be careful.
Especially since they did an engine swap to a non factory engine.
I can only imagine the mess they made.

rethinking

Alright guys thanks for the advice. Supposedly all work and maintenance had been done by Toyota? But the guy wants $9000 for it. Supposedly the engine has 30,000 on it. Do you guys know anywhere else to find a diesel without importing from CAnada?

Thanks again!!

I have never heard of Toyota doing an engine swap for a non standard engine. As far as I know the 1HZ was never in the 60 series. The only diesels that I know he 60's shipped with are the 3B/2H/12HT. There might of been others, but I don't know.

Where are you located?

Cheers,
Nick

BTW: I can't comment on the 1HZ and bio-diesel. Take a read through the archives more general info. You will want to make sure you have the new fuel lines and seals etc...

Cali

Hey Nick I'm in Santa BArbara California. Thanks for all the valuable info. big help could've gotten myself in deep s--t. What type of Toy do you have?

Casey

Well, I knew it was only a matter of time before someone on mud found this vehicle. I talk to the owner last week about his unusual 60 series, and told him I am very interested in buying it. Not sure if you talked to owner, or when you looked at it.

Michael

60 owner from Colorado

I've only exchanged e-mails. It's weird though b/c I can't pin down how the damn thing is registered. The owner is confusing me. he wrote me back saying the title is from Clorado with a gas VIN. Then bhe says he has the original alabama title? In Cali you need the vin to be diesel so you don't have to pass smog!! HAve you got the skinny how it's currently registered/ legal? From Pics it looks nice. He also says he is leaving the country for 2 months in a week.

Good luck!

Where is it located? In Guatemala City or? Some folks do good work but I wouldn't trust most mechanics here to do a really good job.

Many vehicles here are U.S. salvage so be CAREFUL!

Maybe yes .. you know not all things overhere are by the straight rule .. maybe the swap made by someone that work in a Toyota Dealer .. who knows ..

Anycase 9k USD are a lots .. !!! here in Panamá you can buy a 1HZ drivetrain for 3500 USD easy .. and do the swap for about 1000 US more .. but you must ! need to stay here and verify all jobs are done properly.

Where is it in Guatemala City? There is a green one, looks like an FJ60 with a snorkel but it's been for sale for months here locally.
