Sears automotive counter guy tells me that these batteries go on sale (10% off or $10 off coupon for a limited time) from time to time in the ABQ Journal newspaper. We don't get the daily paper so if you happen to see these batteries go on sale, please post up here. Once again, these are the Sears Diehard Platinum batteries, not the usual Diehard batteries.

I need to pick up one more battery.

Thanks.

I would be interested too. My Optima is starting to show signs of weakness ... less than 12 volts in the morning. It's on the watch list.

Ali, just FYI. I went to the Sears website and it appears the giant Platinum Marine you insisted I get for Da'40 is no longer available. They still had several others listed, just not the big one.

that's a shame, I wonder why it's no longer avail? Oh well, at least we won't be getting a hernia lifting that heavy sumbitch!!!

You can get surface blemished batteries downtown at MOR-CO Battery: Auto, Truck, Commercial, Marine, RV, Motorcycle Batteries . Prices went up a little and they're not getting as many blems as before, but regular batteries are $35, Red Top Optimas are $55 and Blue or Yellow tops are $75 (all with exchange). Call first for your size. They're guaranteed for one year.

I recommend NOT getting one! I was at Mor-co the other day, no blems. Got two batteries, military terminals, some cables made, and a two bank battery charger! I'll only buy batteries from there! Great customer service! Plus it turns out I know the guy!

Unfortunately Mor-Co carries Optima POS and wet cells - neither of which I am particularly fond of for my 80. But I have to agree, they have good customer service.

Both batteries in my truck are almost 6 years old and will get replaced soon. I'm planning to get the Sears batteries. The regular Diehard in my DD is 2 years old and wouldn't start the car this morning. Battery charger is on in right now and I'm headed to Sears as soon as it is charged up enough to spin the engine.

After reading some other threads I found out the Platinum is the same as the Odyssey, but cheaper - about $100 cheaper. I also found out that Optimas had QC problems a couple of years ago. I'm not sure if they're up to snuff or not now, but here's this:

I'm going to hijack my own thread a tad:

more and more of us are going to AGM batts for our rigs and we need to be aware that the old battery chargers will not perform adequately on these batts. One of these days, I'm gong to have to invest in the new design batt chargers that can handle wet cells as well as AGM batts.

If you need more info on this, a quick search will reveal more info so I won't clutter up this thread.

When I did my "turn your head and cough" last week the doc noticed a slight hernia. I'm sure it's from lifting that bastard into Da'40.

I've had a Sears Die-hard Platinum in my FJC for a year or so and really like it; will be replacing the one in the 40 with one by spring time.

Ali - I'm still learning about batteries. It sounds like you would classify the Diehard Platinum as an AGM battery?

I did get a Diehard Platinum for the Tacoma in early December. I've been pleased with it so far. I skied Red River and it was below zero in the morning. The truck started right up after being parked outside overnight.

I also got a battery "maintainer/charger" from Sears (Craftsman brand, I think). It seems similar to the "Battery Tender" version that I've seen elsewhere. I asked about whether this was the right type of charger for the battery and I don't think the guy knew that there was more than one type, or else he just wanted me to shut up and buy the thing. Any thoughts on how to tell if a charger is the correct type for a given battery?

Your charger should have diff settings for AGM vs wet cell batteries. I know of at least one Craftsman charger has this feature but they probably all do.

so AGM is dry cell? like the optima? I have a NAPA orbital in my 40. it has to be dry cell because it sits on it's side. I may need a new one before the run on Sun. I have to check it again when I get home.

My previous statement is misleading. AGM - absorbed glass mat vs typical lead acid batteries that are immersed in a bath of sulfuric acid. I'm not sure if it can be called a 'dry' cell but it's definitely a sealed package. You need a chemical reaction to produce voltage so technically, everything is 'wet'. However, you can pretty much orient any Platinum, Orbitals, Odysseys, Optimas and several others in any position. At least that's my understanding; please correct me if I'm wrong.

I thought the Optimas and Odysseys were "gel cells."

Everyone checking their papers?

Just making sure!
