Yo Destin! That frame is looking awesome!! Isnt it nice not having a rusted POS!?!?
Far as prep and paint...Ospho from Ace hardware at 10$ a bottle is very similar to metal ready I think.
Phosphoric acid is the main ingredient in both.
I used ospho on my interior repaint...spraying it on the baremetal/old paint letting it sit a bit then wiping off with a clean rag.
I also picked up some pre paint cleaner from the auto paint shop...same deal spray on wipe off.
Check my paint thread for the name of the cleaner stuff.
I would be pretty tempeted to just use brush on rustoleum in your choice of black...gloss is best rust protection. You can paint over it with a coat of satin or flat if you like that look better! That frame is in awesome shape and I dont think I would cover it with 1/4" of POR. Thats just me...I also hate bedliner so dont even think about it!!! LOL Anything that can "delaminate" from the surface and leave an area for water to get trapped stays away from my 40.

Thanks man :)

There is some surface rust here and there but pretty much solid :D

Can you paint the rustoleum over the light surface rust after hitting it all with ospho acid?

Sending all the skid plates and guards and battery tray to get powder coated black with some other parts soon :D

I wouldn't powder coat...but that's just me. I would rather see it painted properly. Same deal with the POR stuff. I have never used it, but from my understanding of, I don't want to either...just a personal choice.

Nice pics Destin...have any more from around the front end, and engine area?

Thanks man :)

Yeah i can see if I can have the shop paint the guards black, but They might have taken everythign to the media blasters already ;)

I will check in monday :D

I will take more photos of the engine area tomorrow when i power was it one last time :D

Can you send me a link to the paint and the primer so I know I am getting the correct stuff?

You have to mix hardener in the top coat for it to seal set solid right?
( new to painting stuff on my own :D )

Looking good destin.

Are you using the bracket on the on the back of the frame. It looks like it might have been the base support for a rack that went over the soft top. Maybe for a light boat. What ever it is your never going to have a better chance to remove it and clean that area of the frame up. If they drilled new holes no better time to to fill them in.

I just used ace rust stop primer and paint....its very similar to rustoleum. Hardener is not necessary though valspar makes an enamel hardener that works...didnt notice a lot of difference with the hardener vs without.
Black rustoleum brushes out real nice...better than the ace rust stop I think. Could rattle can it for an even smoother finish but thats a pita.
Cool thing about a rustoleum paint job is its cheap, easy, wont kill you, and you can always give it another coat anytime down the road and make it look new again.

pic of oem (I think) hitch on my 69

coolio

I think you need the hardener cause if any fuel or oils touch it it will take the paint off :(
You can brush on the valspar stuff?

por15 seems cool, but it takes forever to order.
I just want it to be all wrapped up and and clean and protected so i do not have to worry about it rotting later :D

What you use is really up to you...factory painted the frame and axles.
The valspar hardener you mix with the paint...8:1 if I remember right.
I had to order the hardener no one had it local. Its available at tractor supply I think.

cool thanks man.

This stuff is all new to me so just asking dumb questions and collecting data :D

Hope to start painting it monday :D

I hear ya! I am still learning too...so dont listen to anything I say!!!

Do some tests on some small parts. If you screw em up it will be less work to sand em down! I played around with my under seat box lid...It was big enough to test my hvlp gun on but small enough to toss in my sandblast cabinet if I screw it up...which I did. LOL

2 things scare me with por15...

1 its a bitch to get off (which is good and bad)
2 its picky as far as prep/recoat/topcoat goes...I like easy...put a coat on, come back the next day or week and decide if I want/need to put another coat on.

yeah i hear ya

maybe i should just clean it up and have the paint shop paint it up :D

like a erathane primer to seal it up :)

I will see if they wince when i mention it has a drive train motor and s*** attached hehe.

I prolly end up brush painting it :D

Thanks :D

Do you mean the rear hitch?
Is that not stock?

I will take inner and outer photos tomorrow to confirm if that is helpful :D

Pintle hook was standard on the early soft top models. Not sure if it when as late as 64. What you have is nothing I've seen that was OEM. FJ40s never had a receiver hitch available as a option. I've seen a trailer ball setup called stock but I think those were just dealer istalled.

I have seen a few Pintle hooks on ebay :D

Maybe i will snatch one up and swap it out :D

Again, I would go with paint on the frame and extra parts...no powder coating, no POR...just proper prep work, proper sealers, proper primers, and good paint. I have no problem with rustoleum or tremclad, but for the extra $$$, with all the work you are doing, I would take a little longer if need be, and take it to your painter...no need to rush

Speaking of paint, are you going to paint the firewall, and the inner front fenders black? I am pretty darn sure that this is the way it came from the factory, and is what I was going to do. I also noticed a few recently painted rigs that have not done this, and they look freaken awesome...but I am a purist, and this extra black is what I am going to do, so I thought I'd ask :hillbilly:

The underside of the hood were black also on some early models I've seen. Pretty much the whole engine bay. I guess Toyota figured when stuff leaked off the engine it wouldn't as bad:rolleyes:
