I am heading out on Wednesday morning from the Denver metro area, so if there are others heading out then too, I would love to rendezvous and caravan. Stan, are you still planning on camping Wednesday night at Owl Creek Pass? If so let me know where and we'll see you there en route to Ouray.
we leave houston 5am sat and head to a no internet/cell area of angelfire. Since this is coming down to the wire for planning to meet up tue or wed and where, could someone send me a txt and hopefully it will go through. The denver route is going to determine when we leave angelfire.
Hi Stan, not sure who all is planning to make this, but maybe it would be easier to just set up an itinerary that leaves Tuesday and set a meeting spot on Wednesday for potentially yourself and anyone else to meet halfway there?
I will be leaving on Wednesday morning. A few things came up and I have to be here on Tuesday for one of our sponsor boxes to arrive. We wouldn't want to leave that behind!
So, as of right now if you are interested in joining me to Ouray, I can take us on a scenic route that can include Red Cone and Webster Pass. That's a few hour side trip, but it is on the way. Then, we will proceed to Owl Creek Pass to camp for the night. We can camp in a primitive area that I know of, or even camp in the campground ($14 fee)
There are other trail options along the way if Red Cone isn't your thing. There are some obstacles on that trail.
We will pass through Gunnison, CO and all your last minute provisions can be purchased there. I have a favorite coffee shop and burger spot that I like to hit. Plus, there's a gas station that lets you sticker the pumps! HIH3 is still proudly displayed!
Stan, Red Cone and Webster sound great. We will plan on heading into Georgetown and then up Guanella Pass on Tuesday and meet you guys on Wednesday. Let us know a meeting spot, maybe somewhere on 285 right near where Guanella dumps out or at 285 and 60?
If anyone wants to leave Tuesday and come with us we'd welcome some company. Anyone know any good camping spots near Guanella? We'll probably try to do Argentine Pass or McClellan Mountain trail and maybe find a spot along there? Since I'll have the whole family with and we'll be fully loaded at that point would love to have something mapped out.
Plenty of camping at Argentine. It's all primitive camping. There is a King Soopers in Conifer where I usually do the meet-up, but that will be a little back tracking for you. We'll work it out over the next few days. I want to make sure our entire group is up for Red Cone. I wouldn't call it difficult, but its got a few spots. The last thing we want is for someone to break something prior to the event! There are easier trails on the area and I want as many folks to join as possible.
Awesome, thanks Stan! I'm up for whatever. I've got a set of maxtrax, winch , hi lift, recovery gear and am a firm believer in the taking good care of my stuff mantra! In other words, if folks want to come, we should have plenty of gear and no-how to get them through safely. I'm going to try my hardest not to break anything, pretty sure the fun factor will go down pretty quickly if the wife and kids have to sit around for a few hours watching me lay on my back in the dirt wrenching on the 100!
I'm flying into Denver weds morning and then heading to Slee to get my rig. Was planning to run direct to grand junction weds night and pickup my trailer at Jonathan's, but if there was a way to meet up weds and then ride with y'all Thursday I might be up for that.
Kind of two different directions. But, you could come with us Wednesday and then when we turn for Owl Creek, you'll stay straight and go into Montrose. Jonathan lives about an hour from there . It would be about an 1.5 hours from where we turn off. It's a good clip out of the way for you, but still a fun route to see. If you wanted to camp without your trailer on Wednesday, you could head up to Jonathan's on Thursday and then back to Ouray.... But again, that's a lot of back tracking. Another option would be to go to Jonathan's, and then meet us at camp on Owl Creek. PM me for the camp spot if you'd like. That's a lot less out of the way traveling for you.
If I can finish up a few things in Ouray early on Thursday, we could hit a trail close to HIH HQ and be back in time for everyone's arrival.
If anyone is interested in seeing a behind the scenes look at Slee Offroad, I have that set up for us as well. It will give you a chance to see the day to day operations at one of the biggest suppliers of 100 Series products in the country. It's a possible meet-up spot for us to begin the route, but slightly out of the way (about 30 mins total if we're coming from I-70 back down to 285) @BJTLC100@ENGINE er are you guys able to hook up with us too?
Yes, I can join the crew for the caravan on Wednesday morning, what time are we rolling out? Do you want me to meet you at the gas station pull off on Orchard and Parker?
@fireball what time were you expecting to hit the trail? We are trying to decide what to do before we meet up with the group wed. Our other option is hit the trails around great sand dunes on our way up from angelfire.
I'm good with red cone. Do I meet everyone in montezemolo if not at slee? I'm more interested in hitting trails then touring slee.
@ENGINE er Red Cone starts on the other side of the hill from Montezuma. It's off 285 near the town of Grant. We will come down Webster Pass after Red Cone and that will put us right back on 285. From there it's about 4 hours to camp. I'm thinking we'll meet at King Soopers in Conifer on Wednesday morning, run Red Cone/Webster and head for camp. Stops along the way will be in Buena Vista for fuel and Gunnison for fuel/coffee shop, and last minute provisions.
There is nowhere to air up after Red Cone so we'll need to air up on the trail. My truck will already be overpacked with HIH stuff, so I'll have no Powertank with me. Small compressor only.
We will probably be in Georgetown around 1130 or 12, planning to head up quinella pass, hit the two trails in the area explore the mines and find a camp spot for the evening. Then will meet Stan and the rest of the crew somewhere near Grant at whatever time and location he appoints.
I've got the medium-size ARB compressor which does a pretty decent job of getting the tires back up to 30 PSI or so. If you're hoping to go higher than that were going to be sitting around twiddling our thumbs waiting for a bit.
