Similar to last year, I will be leading a group of 100 Series owners to Ouray for the 100s in the Hills Event.
This will be our official Denver Area 100s in the Hills Event page. We'll use this thread to coordinate all of our info on meet up times, places, routes and ideas. Since there are folks coming from all over the US, it's important to acclimate properly and what better way than to slowly make our way to Ouray via some of Colorado's fantastic routes.
As of right now, I plan on leaving Denver on Tuesday July 29th.
My usual route would include 285, 50, Owl Creek Pass and 550 into Ouray. This year, I'd like to show off some of the Front Range's great trails on the way, so plan 2 nights of camping before reaching the event. We could possible do just one night of camping and leave early on Wednesday the 30th, as long as everyone is up for a long day on and off road. I need to be in Ouray early Thursday morning for HIH business.
The route will include Red Cone Pass which is one of my favorite trails in Colorado and is considered moderate. Similar to Poughkeepsie Gulch in difficulty, maybe a little tougher. Good tires and sliders are recommended. If you're pulling a trailer, this is a loop, so you can leave the trailer near the trailhead and pick it back up on the way out. If you're not comfortable driving that trail, then by all means leave your 100 at the trailhead and ride along. This pre-event run is open to anyone who would like to join us and I'm sure I'll have some Rising Sun members tagging along. There will be open seats for all. One more caveat, if most folks are stock or close to it and not comfortable with Red Cone, we'll do something more mild as I have a few in mind.
After Red Cone (or optional mild trail), we'll hit the highway again. There are a few stops we'll make along the way including an area along the Gunnison River that I fish. Kids can throw rocks in the water, dogs can swim and run, it's just a nice break. Then we'll head for Owl Creek Pass. We had a group of 7 last year and Owl Creek was a highlight for everyone. Mild road and Subaru approved, but the views are phenomenal. Plan on camping in that area.
If the majority of folks can make this a double overnighter, our route will change slightly to add 2 more trails. Looking forward to seeing you there and stay tuned for more exact times and meet up spots.
