Similar to last year, I will be leading a group of 100 Series owners to Ouray for the 100s in the Hills Event.

This will be our official Denver Area 100s in the Hills Event page. We'll use this thread to coordinate all of our info on meet up times, places, routes and ideas. Since there are folks coming from all over the US, it's important to acclimate properly and what better way than to slowly make our way to Ouray via some of Colorado's fantastic routes.

As of right now, I plan on leaving Denver on Tuesday July 29th.
My usual route would include 285, 50, Owl Creek Pass and 550 into Ouray. This year, I'd like to show off some of the Front Range's great trails on the way, so plan 2 nights of camping before reaching the event. We could possible do just one night of camping and leave early on Wednesday the 30th, as long as everyone is up for a long day on and off road. I need to be in Ouray early Thursday morning for HIH business.

The route will include Red Cone Pass which is one of my favorite trails in Colorado and is considered moderate. Similar to Poughkeepsie Gulch in difficulty, maybe a little tougher. Good tires and sliders are recommended. If you're pulling a trailer, this is a loop, so you can leave the trailer near the trailhead and pick it back up on the way out. If you're not comfortable driving that trail, then by all means leave your 100 at the trailhead and ride along. This pre-event run is open to anyone who would like to join us and I'm sure I'll have some Rising Sun members tagging along. There will be open seats for all. One more caveat, if most folks are stock or close to it and not comfortable with Red Cone, we'll do something more mild as I have a few in mind.

After Red Cone (or optional mild trail), we'll hit the highway again. There are a few stops we'll make along the way including an area along the Gunnison River that I fish. Kids can throw rocks in the water, dogs can swim and run, it's just a nice break. Then we'll head for Owl Creek Pass. We had a group of 7 last year and Owl Creek was a highlight for everyone. Mild road and Subaru approved, but the views are phenomenal. Plan on camping in that area.

If the majority of folks can make this a double overnighter, our route will change slightly to add 2 more trails. Looking forward to seeing you there and stay tuned for more exact times and meet up spots.

A quick back of the receipt itinerary has been hatched over dinner tonight!

We would love to meet you guys in Denver on Tuesday to head down.

What time are you planning to leave Denver on Tuesday ?

Count us in!

I think we are in. A mid day Tuesday departure is best for us, we will be coming from angelfire. We can try to make anything work.

I would love to join you Stan, but may not be able to leave until Wednesday morning. Depending on what the group does, I can always meet up en route to Owl Creek Pass with the group and camp with you there that night.

I cant get that attachment to work.

What time tuesday is everyone planning to hit the trail?

No definitive plan yet, Sam. It's either a Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning departure. Tuesday would make it a double overnighter with Red Cone Pass and one possibly one other trail. Wednesday would be Red Cone, then about 4 hours on and off pavement to a camp east of Ridgway, CO. Then a Thursday morning departure to 100s in the Hills headquarters.

Either sounds good to me and the lady. If i bring my fly rod think you could give me a quick and dirty lesson on casting? Been 10 years since its been used.

Tuesday departure works for us! Would like to see as much of co as possible!

Absolutely. I've got a few spots.

It's possible to run a local trail, then pick up the group Wednesday morning. We'll finalize a few weeks before the event so everyone knows what we're doing.

@paflytyer - any more firm plans for this? We are planning to arrive into Denver late Monday evening. Since we'll be arriving late and joining your crew Tuesday morning was planning to just book a hotel. Any recommendations for inexpensive lodging Monday that would put us at a good spot to meet up on Tuesday?

Thanks!

Trying to finalize my plans. Do we have a meeting location and time for this yet?

I think Aimcotaco & I will be leading the "late show" again this year for any other slackers who are interested in caravaning. Leaving the greater Denver area around 5:00 on Thursday evening, with aspirations of making it to camp by midnight. I'll try to check back here, but PM or something if you want to be sure to hook up.. we're 2m geeks so 146.460/ColCon the whole way if you want to catch up that way. :)

@ENGINE er et al, we are booked for a hotel in Centennial on Monday night. After two back to back days of 14+hrs in the car, we'll be glad to arrive in the Mile High City. Planning to have a poke around the city in the morning, maybe a quick stop at Slee, and then meeting up with the group.

If the group can't head out until Wednesday I'd love to get a recommendation for a mild trail and campsite for Tuesday night, and then meet everyone Wednesday.

Hmm, would be nice to get it done early, but I don't anticipate arrive to the Denver area much before 10pm or so.... Logistics??? Tuesday morning??? Any other ideas?

I'll be coming from angelfire, most likely meet up with the group tues or wed depending on what we do in angelfire and what plans emerge for trails out of Denver.

Let's just do it in Ouray.. it's a 1-2 hour job and not worth wasting your evening over.

As for Tuesday night, I'll toss out one suggestion of Guanella Pass- take I-70 up to Georgetown, then up the pass, find a spot, then down the other side of the pass to meet the group on 285 the next morning. Another option would be to just camp around Kenosha pass somewhere, not far from that same intersection.
