Those of you using Delta units to control your electric fans, how do you like 'em? I'm planning to order the FK-50P to control the dual-fan assembly from a V6 Ford Contour. I know some of you have been running them for a while and liked them initially, so are they still holding up and working reliably? I'm very interested to see how much switching from a clutch fan to an electric fan will affect my performance and economy.

I stopped really caring about my mileage, so I'm mainly wanting to do this to free up some HP. Though anything that ends up increasing my economy as an aftereffect is always good, too...

A. it wont make a lick of difference in the HP dept. In fact, expect the charging system to be stressed because of it.

B. I traded some e-mails with the dude that owns DC. I hope the people that have one of his controllers do not have any problems and I hope you have some time on your hands to receive yours.

Hmmmm, that doesn't sound too promising. I take it you weren't impressed, huh?

As far as the charging system, I've gotten my 120A alternator working and augmented the charge lead with 1AWG welding cable. As long as the RPMs are above idle, it works like a champ :D
 
That alt will work wonders.

And no. I was not impressed at all. IMHO very poor businessman..

Per Brian (the owner of DCC) the 35 amp unit is fine to run dual Contour fans - that is what he uses on the dual Contour fans that he sells directly. The 50 will not buy you any additional durability for use with this fan.

I know of 2 people that had problems with the 35 dying over time.

I disagree. On my FJ-62 when I swapped in a Contour dual fan and DCC controller I noticed a difference. At highway speeds I found that I could maintain hills easier. Some improvement at WOT.

Now take this with a grain of salt - nothing is going to make it a rocket. No noticeable MPG gains and no noticeable power difference around town. But I hardly ever drive mine around town and I get ~16.5mpg@70mph and that's about all I expect.

I would not do this swap for mpg and I would only do it for hp if I was really committed to getting every last bit of power out, because your money is better spent on exhaust or ignition upgrades. I did the swap because I run a 180 t-stat and the mechanical fan, even with a new clutch, just wasn't well suited to the lower opening temp. And I like to tinker with things :grinpimp:

No problems with the DCC unit to date. I do need to make a cover for it though to keep it from getting banged up while working under the hood. I went with DCC despite the issues that Mace mentions, which are true, because Brian publishes the mean failure rates of the components in his controllers. No one else does that that I've seen.

That's what I was thinking. It looks to me like the 50 is just an updated version of the 35, with the added feature of using a potentiometer to give you precise control over the operating temp of the unit.

Moby, a little more power for holding hills is exactly what I want so I can get over the mountain passes easier.

Ah, I just looked at the DCC site. That 50 is new since I talked to Brian and bought my 35. I like it, I might have to upgrade. Then I'll always have a back up, I love redundency :D

Yeah, I hear you. If you haven't already upraded your ignition and exhaust I would recommend those first. More bang for the buck. For ignition either Performance Distributors' ignition (through Man-a-fre) or an MSD stacker ignition works well. I've run both and the gains are pretty equal (switched from the MSD box to Performance Distributors because the MSD isn't compatible with my J&S safeguard).

I've got a Mallory Promaster coil being fed by a 6AL box (love it), and for the exhaust I've got a 2.5" cat back Flowmaster system and I straight piped my cats (which made a HUGE difference) a couple years ago. I've considered headers and the larger downpipes, but that'll wait until I have a bit more money to throw away. Maybe if I swap in a 2F block (2FE conversion) one day I'll do the header and downpipes.

I used an MSD briefly, and it took a s*** on me after only a week. I figure it was just a bum unit, but I went with the complete Mallory instead of just replacing it.
 
Based on what I experienced you'll probably see some small improvements with the fan conversion at highway speeds (torque converter locked up). Not enough to get out of 3rd on any of the real mountain passes in Washington though. Where I noticed it most was between Seattle and Portland on I-5. I didn't have to get into the throttle as hard on the rolling hills and was able to keep up with traffic easier on the sections that have a truck lane. That was with my old motor with 20% leakdown in the #5 cylinder.
