I have the Garmin topo on my my netbook, a few of you guys helped me with it at a meet, but it sucks. Not enough detail, what other guys had on their topo, i didnt have at all. So a friend of mine installed the DeLorme topo 8.0, but its not the easiest to navigate and figure out. So is anyone familiar with it that could show me around at the meet tomorrow?

The DeLorme software is user-hostile on a good day... The advantage is being able to overlay USGS topos and photo layers. But Garmin has a ton of other free maps. I'm 50/50 on making the meet tomorrow. Can show you more then.

What version of TOPOUSA can overlay USGS maps?

I started with 7 and now have 9, both do it. You have to pay to download them, but you can get unlimited annual download for $40.

I am running TopoUsa. I have downloaded most of Arizona in 7.5 detail. It is a nice upgrade. Granted Topo is not the most user friendly, but on the other hand, I am not the most computer friendly user. I can bring my ToughBook along and show ya what I've got...... John

Using the toughbook is probably the better usage model. Honestly, the ONLY reason I went DeLorme was for the PN-40 handheld GPS unit to use while hiking. It has a rockin' screen that is very readable even in sunlight, although a bit small. So I transfer all my map packages to that including 7.5 USGS and sat photo overlays.

I started with it on my PN-40 also, as we needed them for the Abandoned Mine Project out in the Middle Gila River area for the BLM a couple of years ago. I also had it on my desktop. Unfortunately, my PN-40 died, so it was the perfect time to grab a ToughBook. Much easier to see while driving on the trial than the handheld, especially on the mount that Kevin designed. John
