Conversely, the majority of users gain thousands of dollars worth of free technical knowledge from the shared resources here, so a star is a minor contribution for that information.

The free information that other members supply, that a web site owner can attach advertising to for revenue. You made my point. I've been in the web business since 1997 I fully understand the costs involved in maintaining a website of this size... I have no issue with monetizing user generated content.

Back to my post, I think the benefits of enabling users to contribute (visa vi edit function) far out ways any downside an occasional fubar user generates. In terms of of silver stars, the inference is if you pay you get to be in a better club.

^ THIS!

If you guys read why the editing ban has been implemented you would understand that even people with stars and thousands of posts occasionally go FUBAR and cause havoc on the zen of mud. Unfortunately a few people caused this and all of us have to suffer and deal with it. It is what it is. The Silver star was not intended to give you extra powers and privileges. Those are simply a benefit. It was intended for you to offer your thanks to the community and contribute to the ongoing costs of server maintenance, domain registration, mobile app integration and Woody's 40 series fund. It's a small token of our appreciation for the knowledge of what 35" tire is the best for mud and snow conditions.

The Silver Star Is NOT an Membership Fee!

Sorry I got confused by the thread title in the FAQ called "Silver Star Memberships"

I agree that the Roundup thread wasn't tech, although it was on it's way to be a potential good tech. (If only I would have mentioned which floor mats I was taking for the trip, I could have salvaged the thread on this board.)
For the record- there is nothing left of that thread on this board anymore.

In the end it seems like you (Mr. Moderator) missed my point when I said there were Moab and other similar threads (not tech) that were never messed with and survived your guillotine on this board. Was it because you liked the thread, because you never read, or found some spec of tech in it.... I can't really say and I don't really give a rat's ass. I just want to know how you decide what to blow up and what to ship out.

I am not here to poke anyone in the eye, but it just helps to know what the rationale is when stuff like this happens. I get the feeling these moves are made in a bubble and that's fine. Just say it.
If youwant this to be 100% tech and no discussion of trips, wheeling, or explorative discussion, that's cool. Let's just be clear on where that line in the sand is drawn b/c today it's not black and white or simple to understand.
I spent more than a couple of years on the 80 board before here and we never had this type of soup kitchen style policing. Different strokes... different folks it seems.

The Roundup thread isn't tech, plain and simple. I realize the 100 series folks don't venture far from the 100 section, so threads like that stay in the section for a short time to get some notice, and then get moved to the appropriate section. There's still a link in the 100 section to the thread, so it's not like they've completely disappeared.

I'm often surprised at how many people here have a hard time with what's tech and what isn't, what's appropriate for a thread and what isn't, and how butt hurt they get when something gets moved or deleted. It's not all black and white, but it's not that hard either. Some forums simply posting classifieds out of the classifieds section will get you time off. I don't do this as a full time gig, I do what I can, some things get missed or slip by, but it's never personal. The 100 section is an odd beast in that you have the dentist who just bought on '07 and wants to know what floor mats are best all the way over to folks doing 2 month vehicle dependent expeditions with extreme set-ups. I get that and try to strike a line down the middle for tech and chat in threads.

Or, as others would believe, I make totally random judgement calls based on who I like and what day of the week it is.

Tech is tech, pretty simple, and that's per our benevolent dictator Woody. Classifieds, trips, and chat all move out. Is every thread going to be about how you figured out how to wire in a flux capacitor? No. But is "hey I just washed my truck" going to stay? No.

And if I look at the 80 section right now, I can see 4 moved threads in the first few pages - a couple to chat, one deleted, and one to trail events.

Thank dog for mods that get that done. Anyone who doubts that a board can be killed by thread hijacking/OT/etc is not getting around enough. Keep it pure, keep it valuable. And thanks for the hard work too.

The moderator over there is a real PIA:eek:

Is this thread tech?

Good grief!

It isn't very complicated. Pic thread is pics and directly related stuff. Tech is tech with minor exceptions.

We should all try to keep things friendly, useful, relevant and clean. If you can't or won't, we help you. Sure, lots of judgement calls and subjectivity. That's why the mods are not robots (or so we like to have you believe... :D)

This thread for instance is walking a fine line... :)

And what tire would that be? Cause I like the Sooper Dooper Snow Pooper:confused: Best tire, period! I kid, of course!

I paid for the star for that exact reason, the knowledge I've gained has been worth 10 times the cost of the "siver star"

Take it to chat!

^ Double Post! Shame.

Thanks for posting up e. Everyone needs to stop being butt hurt. It's a freekin' internet forum. There are other alternatives out there if you don't like it. I subscribe to several of them and they are no where near as polished, well managed or useful as this one.

So true, I also frequent several other forums and this one is the best for many reasons, short list; the people(open minded, smart, polite, etc), the tech, the frequent activity on prudent topics, fairly clean threads, etc. Ok, so much for short I'll stop now.

Thats it, I'm buying a star!

It doesn't matter anymore. If you want to talk about driving K2 in your 100, go to the trail section and post up.

Cruising Moab... see above or other various posts layered throughout this board.

. The CM thread, as I already stated, will be moved after a bit.

That's unfortunate, but if major trail runs in a hundy don't belong on the board, it's your world and we livin' it.

It's Woody's world, not mine. He makes the rules. If major (and who defines that?) runs stay, well, what about the smaller runs, why don't they get a fair shake? And if they stay, what about me posting up that I'm going out this weekend and looking for any other 100's that want to come along? It's not that there's anything wrong with those threads, but they aren't tech, and that type of thread already has a place on this board. So, instead of subjectively saying one thread about a trail run gets to stay, another doesn't, they move. I already had someone crying about your Roundup thread stating that I was showing favoritism to the TLCA by letting it stay in the section for the couple weeks it did.

We should all show favortism to TLCA, but that is my subjective butt opinion. I think we beat this to death. No hard feelings here, but it was a good discussion to understand how things work sometimes.

This site is one of the best in class and no doubt Woody has a lot to deal with considering how many folks are on here daily pounding the keyboard with all kinds of stuff.

Promoting responsible off-highway vehicle use, safe recovery techniques, and a tread lightly philosophy are just as "tech" as floor mats and window tint discussions. IMO. I'll try to keep my fluff threads as techie as possible. :)
