Just as a data point for y'all, local Gulf South Toyota dealer estimate, received yesterday, for HG replacement, Radiator replacement (brass), stat, and PHH and other hoses:

$3187. Let the negotiations begin....

FYI

hm......what's your 'late-July' look like? :-)

What a rip off! Drag it to Denver and I'll do it for $3186...sure I've never done one before, but for that much I'll learn.. :)

That's alot of money...argh...good luck!

.....OR........Dan..since i'm heading to NM in a week....(or was it AZ?)....you're invited to submit a competive bid!

Get it this far and we can bring Robbie in off the bench....:D

This has got me thinking seriously.........

Never the one to avoid stupid questions, let's say hypothetically I'm 1/2 way to Albu-qwirky or Bean town, and it blows: What should one expect to experience when a HG blows anyway?

Depends on where it blows. When my 91 pickup blew the head gasket it had copious abouts of white smoke which was really vaporized coolant coming out the tail pipe. No question in my mind what had happened.

You got a HG problem, and you're planning a road trip?

Drive/drag the pig up to Boston. I'll do it for $2000.00 and you can spend the rest in Boston on a vacation.

Where were you when my HG went ;p

bkgii -

Did you happen to ask what the cost was for only replacing the PHH?

Yes. Actually, it was planned FOR me...I get to sleep with the passenger if I go.

:) Nope... I figured if all the rest has gotta' be done, and given the stories about the PHH I've read here, I might as well get someone else to do it while it's down

Oh.....update from the dealer this a.m., as they are doing an 'exhaust gas test' to really diagnose whether or not its a HG problem as opposed to a leak: that $3187 quote ALSO includes resetting valves (w/seals) and timing chain replacement.

More to follow mid-morning once the jury is back in.

If I were having the headgasket replaced with 140K on the engine I would have a full valve job performed. I not sure if that is what you are saying the price includes. I would also have the injectors removed, cleaned, and flow tested. It will never be easier or less expensive to do that work then at the same time the head gasket is being replaced.

Check out http://www.rceng.com/service.htm for injector service. Be aware that the dealer will offer to clean the injectors, but will not have the equipment necessary to do flow measurement.

Don't know if anyone else would recommend replacing the timing chain, but it should last the life of the engine, it's not like a consumable timing belt, of course if the cost is only an extra $50 it might be worth it.

The expense is in GETTING TO the timing chain. Both oil pans and the whole front of the motor has to come off, effectively doubling the labor time.
