Yep the rectangular opening on the left is not original. The one on the right is for the ashtray.

I agree. Fab up a plate to put there. Put the radio in the glove box, center console, or front roll cage.

the H and V knobs used to be in a lower row

the knobs themselves are all OEM

unless you are going for a museum restoration, why not just use what you have, even the radio opening

Its a hand throttle.

The "throttle" is just that, except used by hand and not foot. Useful when operating a winch or PTO, when slightly higher rpm's are needed. The choke will effect the mixture.

Right. However, in a pinch, when you really need to operate three pedals with two feet at the same time, the choke can double as a hand throttle, provided that you don't need excessive RPM's and it's not for too long. That and parades.
