So I was out checking my oil yesterday (coming up on 60k soon and getting itchy about it) - when I discovered that one of the bolts that holds on the plastic engine cover is missing! I tried removing one of the other 3, and couldn't, at least not easily - so I doubt it's something that just shook loose, it has to be a boo-boo by the dealer last time I took it in.

This wouldn't be the first time they did/didn't do something simple - I came in with a tail light out for normal service (while still under warranty) and it was delivered to me with same tail light out, but the service checklist said all lights functional

Anyway, since the warranty expired, I've been handling most service issues, so it would be easy for them to deny any culpability, so my question is -

anyone know the size/thread bolt I need to fully secure the engine cover?

8MM X 1.25 thread pitch X 20MM length (3/4 inch) with 12MM heads

I was under my Honda this last weekend (a rare occurrence). And saw several bolts missing from the plastic undercarriage. It's only been once at the dealer in the last 6 or 7 years, so it's likely -although possible that the dealer was at fault- that these things may fall off by themselves?

You don't need another bolt. Just consider it a early start on the starter contact job. ;)

You Lexus guys expect an awful lot from the dealer service departments. I am pretty happy if they refill the oil during an oil change (so far they have but I always check).

If you just explain to the parts man what you need (bolt) and why you need it (service lost it) I'm sure he'll comp you. I would not return to service and expect any help.

when they replaced my exhaust manifolds, they ripped the one of those bolts that holds that cover on with the air wrench. The head came right off and now i would have to drill and tap it for that bolt. So i guess its not the first time the dealer has messed up those bolts.

Honestly, Toyota needs to use more american metal. The metal they use for many bolts/nuts ive found is very low quality. Anyone have that little shaft in their ignition break? I can honestly say, at least 10 bolts have snapped on me, even using hand tools and not forcing the subject on anything.

That was probably American metal - from recycled WWII warships.

You don't need that plastic thing on there.
