Despite nurses best efforts to kill me, I think I escaped the sick house without catching the plague, but I guess we'll see.

So, let the quarantine begin...

Went with the spring rod latches for the front. At some point a rubber cap on the end may be necessary, but basically at this point, I'm only using stuff I can find or build in the shop.

Got side two attached latched and hinged.

I kindof hate that front panel, pretty sure it isn't going to grow on me, so I don't think I'll waste a spray bomb on it.

My first inclination had been to use a bit of aluminum expanded metal, or maybe checkerplate.

Think I'm going to go with that, once it's safe to go out again. ( so like 2021. ).

No great loss, that was my first test bit with the metal brake anyways.






Spent a few hours making some dies. Fortunately only needed 4 because they're a bit of a pain in the ass to whittle out.

This was just an amusing coincidence.

Trick is getting s*** to line up when you can't see both sides.

I think allowing them to move a little helps. They kind of self align as they get squished.

My biggest fear was spelling it wrong...

Using 1/8" instead of 1/4 cut down hugely on the distortion, still a bit of wonk I'll have to knock out, but all in all, not too bad.

I had a second chunk of tin in case this was a complete failure, but I think I can live with it, although I might do the second one while I have all the s*** setup. Wall hanging if nothing else.

Don't think I'm gonna bother with the oval in the corner. I'll quit while I'm ahead for once.

Now, I desperately need a beer.

Thanks, it's getting there. A long way from perfect, lots of little details to sort over time, but it looks like I want it to for the most part.

I find too often build threads turn into guys opening little toyota labelled baggies from japan and not actually building s***.

I'm doing this for fun, and it's not just because I'm cheap , but it's way more fun to build something from scratch than to pay someone else to do it.

If this was just an exercise in how much money I could spend it wouldn't be fun anymore.

Like walking past a woodpile and saying, " There's a boat in there" .


I might try stamping the letters in the other piece and then doing the bending. See if that makes a difference.

That's another reason I like a good mongrel cruiser tho.
It doesn't turn into something that's worth too much to be fun.

Closer. Need to make a supply run on monday, my bandsaw blade broke ( and cutting with a zip disc sucks ass once you're used to the bandsaw), and I need a bit more steel to brace up the inside of the gate seeing as it only has hinges at the ends. Guess we'll see if either shop is even open.

Have to make it fat guy proof, because at some point, a fat guy will sit on it.

Opted to use the shackle mounts I'd put at the corners of the deck for hinge points .

Made some brass bushings for them to tighten them up, added bonus is the hinges bind before the gate hits the trailer hitch. I'll figure out some chains or cables to hold the sides at some point too. Maybe just amsteel rope so things stay quiet.

In the end, it would certainly have been easier to have a shop bend those pieces for me, but this was way more interesting, and probably not a hell of a lot less work once I had the brake built.

Kinda wanted a big metal brake anyways, I need to do some flashing on my roof around chimneys, and the biggest stuff you can buy isn't really big enough for how I want to do it.

The actual forming of the panels only took maybe 15 minutes each. All the finicky s*** like hinges and latches and capping ends was what was time consuming, and I'd have had to do that either way.

If I ever have redo them, I might get a shop to do that shape out of aluminum, hopefully that's years away tho.

Maybe I can get it outside to get a proper look at it in the sun and a hot lap down the side road at some point this week.

List of s*** to do before plates is getting shorter.



Front panel below where headache rack will go might get a plank of fir instead of that bent tin. But not today.

Was a shop clean up day, so naturally I used the truck to move some cruiser parts the 100 feet to the shed. (while andy looks on in dismay)

And lastly, an example of what happens when you're sick of welding , but the woman is working from home and on a conference call in the house and it sounds like a freaking contest as to which of the people she's talking to can say "challenging" the most.
I assume that was a keyword in junior management 101. "Use challenging, it's vague and non committal. Use it as a space filler to make yourself sound smrt"

Nah, just something to do. Last time I got accused of the jeep thing I was driving a bj70, so that's how much weight I give those people's opinions. Like anyone in a red hat.

Had to cleanse the pallette from all the metal work.
A change is as good as a rest, etc.

People calling Land cruisers Jeeps drives me nuts. Couple of the older people in my own family do that every time my vehicle comes up in conversation. I gave up trying to correct them.

I work with a bunch of chachis constantly going on about rims and paint.
It's so outside my give a s*** I have to leave the room before I speak and get myself a call from HR
At some point I'll probably give everything but the hood and upper cowl a squirt of green, but it'll be rattle can, after I've fixed the doors.
But not the box. It's staying white by popular demand

Trampstamp and prison bars installed.

Made the headache rack removable, just so it was easier to paint.

I doubt there's more than a couple dozen people on the island outside of this pack of Toyota nerds who'd even know what the teq thing is


Also shortened the lumber rack so it doesn't overhang the front of the cab. Still plenty of length so I can carry ten footers.

Now to find some planks for the sides in the woodpile.

Plankage. I'm kinda surprised this part worked that well, because I didn't exactly plan for it.

Had intended to get some recessed nuts and use the hinge bolts to hold these in, but it really can't go anywhere.

Still probably will because I duffed the tapping on the centre hinge on the other side, so it needs bolts and nuts, and I'd like to keep the insides of these smooth, bolts sticking out will absolutely tear the ass out of my jeans at some point if I leave them.

Not sure if I want to do this treatment for the tailgate or not. I have a checkerplate tailgate protector from the great white ford, might just hack that up, because even with the lumber rack, I'm sure the gate will get a lot of crap laying on the top of it.

In the meantime, I'm gonna go get some plates so I can drive this ****er before the plague gets me.

I have a vague idea for a light slide in camper with a pull out, but I'd have to get back into camping first.
Haven't been in years, because with my backyard here I get my outdoors fix pretty much daily.

Young Steven would just crawl under it and pass out with gear oil dripping on his face. I wouldn't say I prefer glamping, but I like a smidge more comfort than that

Years ago I pulled into a campground in Edgewater just after midnight to find everyone awake and all the lights on. After learning they’d just chased a bear off the property, I welcomed the smell of oil and rubber from the 500 mile trip to get there.

There’s something mildly disturbing about going to sleep under a tarp when a bear that’s not bothered by people was just chased away... after 13 hours on a smaller motorcycle, I ate the last of my food, threw the tarp overtop of the bike, put my frypan under the side stand, and slept underneath the motorcycle. I never heard if the bear came back, but it had no interest in me

Well it survived a trip to chemainus and back. Made sure the old folks were still alive, yelled back and forth across the yard at them.

Swmbo came along and got reacquainted with 40 series life.
The bad smells, the weird noises that range from mildly annoying to downright alarming...she even got the momentary fear of a breakdown when a fuse blew and all gauges went dead. (I had spares)

Drove pretty well, but I do have a bit of a bounce that I'm thinking is wheel/tire related. Might do a swap with the 61's tires when I'm off again and see if that sorts it.

I suspect it will, and if it does, I'll have to start thinking about what rim size to do. Find some 16x8's and keep using the 285's on the 40, or put something new on the 61 and put the stock steelies with 33x10.5's on the 40.

Felt a smidge light in the steering on the highway, so it could probably use a half turn of toe in, but I won't touch that till I've tried it with the other tires.

Methinks I'll be bringing my gauge cluster to work tomorrow night for a little midnight lovin'.... 99999 km's and holding.
