Haha yep, that's kinda the phase 2 version.

Did a frame off with a mint 42 frame, aqualu tub and sacrificed a red 60. it went from gawdawful piece of s*** bj40 to mostly bj42.

Canadian emblem was on it when I bought it in 96 or so. Cast aluminum, so it's a keeper. I'll get Mel to rivet it to my coffin

I'm detecting a theme with you.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. :flipoff2:

I may upgrade the ballgag stopper one day, but it's somewhere below painting on the list.

Although I have wondered if a door lock cylinder could be hacked to work.

Could use an actual edic, not like I don't have enough of those ****ing things, but they piss me off

So maybe I don't know you enough to hack on you. Its all fun and games. Although my punctuation and dry sense of humor isn't really for the super genius.

P.S. I have had way worse kill switches on my rigs. Or lack there of, poor poor clutch.

But until I piss off a moderator enough ya'll going to have to deal with my stink.

Lol, I don't give a s*** man. It's all good.

Half the reason I bothered with a build thread at all was for the abuse heaping, and it's easier than talking to myself and drawing pictures to remind myself what the **** I've done.

Sarcasm and snark in written form tend to get panties bunched, and I rarely communicate without sarcasm or snark.

There's a reason I don't go to the other sections anymore.

Held off on posting this in case it was all an utter failure

I built a brake long enough to bend up the box sides.

The angle iron for it ended up being pretty much free thanks to some math issues at demxx where I bought it, so I figured if this didn't work, I wasn't going to be out much, and if nothing else, I could make my own flashing for when I redo around the chimneys on the house this summer.

I could have built it out of way heavier steel, but it was a trade off of being actually able to pick the ****ing thing up to stash in a corner for the months I wouldn't be using it, and as always, being a cheap ****.

Would have been easier to just drop a template off at a sheet metal place, but if I wanted easy, I'd have just done what @Rigpig does, forget building a cruiser, and just go buy another couple dodges to park in the back woods. :flipoff2:

Seems to work ok tho. :grinpimp:

I finished off that rolled top edge with a lump of wood and mallet to get that bend beyond 90.

I'll have to figure out a way to make the 45 box hooks. Checked out that awlteq guy's method, but it's a bit beyond me.

I'll probably just end up carving them out of a lump of plate.

Someone fussier than I would probably have an issue with the radius of the bends, it's a bit crisper towards the ends but not enough to move the needle on my give a s*** meter.

I assume that's mostly due to flex despite the adjustable trusses on the bender, but whatever. I used 18 gauge, not sure this thing could handle 16ga, but I think 18 is good enough. I'll line the inside with something so the sides are flat when down, and it'll stop the bumps from forming when swmbo starts hurling firewood into it imagining I'm in there...

Real trick will be getting the other side the same.

Not sure what colour to paint these. Green black or white are kindof the options. I'm actually leaning towards white.

This was my practice chunk with the offcut of the sheet.
I ****ed up more than once as you can probably see, but it'll work for the front of the box, and once it's dented to s***, my ****ups will blend right in. :hillbilly:

Lastly, If you don't own a bevel gauge...you should buy one.

I probably have half a dozen from working on boats, but this one's my favourite.

it's probably a hundred years old, and it actually works the best because the lock is up out of the way. Most of the ones you see now have a wing nut for the lock. They suck.

Principle is, you don't give a s*** what an angle is, you just need to recreate it.

Once I'm done with the brake, it's up for grabs as a loaner if anyone wants. You'll need a good solid bench or beam to bolt it to.

I might just take you upon borrowing that. Of course, probably bring beer and
metal so you can ’show me’ how it works. That’s very cool

haha, no worries. Ended up with a fair bit of extra 18ga because you sorta have to take the half sheet once a chunk is pinched off.

it's pretty medieval, definitely has it's limitations, but I was thinking that if I made a different top clamp I could maybe have it work as a ghetto box brake as well. I have space for a half decent sized drawer or two under the tray, but that might be a next winter thing.

Hinges and figgering out how to finish the ends of these sides are next. Tailgate too. I'm debating putting posts at the rear corners ( partly to hold rack better) and pivoting two half gates off them.

Could hang a spare tire off one of them then, but I have to do some more ruminating on that.

Just looks good to me, better than flat and with some structure they have strength.
You working or off this weekend?
Since I’m always looking at how everything is, if you take the roof off are these sides even with
the cab sill line, or will they be higher?

I really like those sides.

They finish it so nicely and most of the degen "just throw a flat deck on it" crowd wouldn't ever bother with this attention to detail.

End caps: I like the idea of a riveted lap joint. strong and won't warp your handywork. They do like to hold water and rust though, you may have noticed being that you've had a cruiser or seven. I bet its all in the prep and primers, not that Toyota cared back in the day.

Colour.. tough one. I say Green or Black. Green will make them stand out a bit (which they deserve) Black will look like s*** once it gets outty dents from flying wood rounds.

I have all these great ideas for you..... perhaps I should mind my own business and build another cruiser. lol (one day)

Digging the steel look, I'd paint it a metallic grey

Haha thanks. They actually turned out quite a bit better than I thought they would considering the general barbarism of the setup, and my habit of eyeballing everything. I agree black is out.

Yeah I'd have liked to do the bare aluminium thing. Maybe next round if I decide to change things.
I do like the look of the utes and little Hino deck trucks with the white sides...the etching primer I normally use is kindof a pale grey, so it should give me an idea of what it'll look like.
Picture of a wanker

Well, he's not wrong...

I have a real 45 tailgate, (beat to s*** wall art) so if I do a drop gate instead of bifold I'll maybe use those latches at the back.

Or something like these. I like simple things I can make myself.
IMG_20200223_142801.jpg

If you had the factory interior cab latches you could make them like the Aqualu style.
They are functional.

Trouble with that style (same as stock 45) is that the hook protrudes through the gate. Which is fine for just a tailgate with fixed sides but I want to be able to drop the sides independently too.

I'll have to think some more about tailgate. Drop or bifold because a fixed post at the corner changes everything.

All about keeping the ******* spare tire out of the way.

Hiding in the shop seems like an ok way to spend the apocalypse.

They talk about social distancing as if it's something new.

I've been doing that s*** for years...:hillbilly:

Can't say I'm looking forward to going to work on wednesday tho.

Anyways, a lot of irritating little bits of mass production. Hinges, hooks etc etc.

Tedious as ****, but what else you gonna do at 2am in the bowels of a hospital? Sure as **** ain't going upstairs.

If you squint, you can see the end caps are 2", and that's 1" square tube as the braces for the hinges, idea being a 1x of fir will slide up in there to finish the inside.

One mostly down, 2 to go. I'll do some more thinking on latches, but I'm still leaning towards the bent rod style for the rear, I could use clamp latches like stock 45 up front, but I'd just as soon have all 4 the same.

Depending on how this worldwide s***show progresses, I have 4 shifts and then I'm off for 2 weeks so I want to get this done. Not that I'll be going anywhere with it when everything is quarantined. :bang:
