Didn't use any. Based on what I saw around the boot and on the surrounding components, it didn't look like much leaked out.
I did figure out how to get grease in the boot - when you take the lower clamp off and push the boot back, there is enough room to get a small diameter tube into the joint. You can use a small grease gun...
Great post Guys. I have been lurking on the Mud forum for about a year now and finally joined. Almost every question I have had has been answered already, it just takes a good search. Great forum, I guess the next step is to get that silver star.
Anyway, this is my second 100 in a year (Dad totaled my '00 ) both have had the boot leak from the inner clamp. I have never experienced this prior to the LC but the write up was outstanding and the pics were a nice bonus. Less than an hour fix, I am so happy not to have had to pull the cv joints as a friend recomended. Thanks!
Oh and my '03 is much nicer than my '00. Thanks Dad!
I was thinking that when replacing the clamps with new after adding new grease, that putting a small amount of red RTV silicon around the sealing surface of the boot would also help against leaks in the future. I'd also use red military grease instead of regular black grease.
The clamps you guys are using are strong. I use them on all sorts of applications out here on the ocean and they never break.
Some of our CV boots are leaking now too. Including the one done by the drunk monkey at the dealer.
Some grease lost. Thinking about pumping some back in so I don't have to take it all apart. Is there some of this white stuff that would be compatible with OEM available at the dealer or elsewhere?
I mean just the grease, I don't want to buy the full boot kit.
If I were doing it I would only be squirting a standard mineral MOLY grease to top up.
But if your boot is really split and all the existing grease is flying out, any grease would be better than none I suppose, I used MOLY to keep me going..........
I have an nice apparatus that I used to inject grease into my CV boot after I found it seeping out. I placed a hard rubber hose into a large (pet med injector) plastic syringe I had been keeping around for something just like this. With a diamter larger than a quarter and about 6 long. I had a universal boot kit laying around so I cut the edge of the grease bag and squirted it into the syringe - it took the entire bag! Awesome. All I needed to do was put in a screwdriver to open a gap parge enough to get my rubber hose in the boot. The sweet thing was that when I injected the new grease the old runny stuff came out.
is there any way of knowing what amount is needed in the boot itself? I have some spray coming from the boots but not as bad of any of these photos. thanks
I'm going to be fixing my leaky CV's tomorrow with PFran's CV band kit (thanks Paul, got it today!). I've been poking around looking for what type of grease to add to the CVs, but haven't really found anything definitive for those of us who want to add grease but don't have the OEM boot kit w/ Mr. T's grease on hand.
I will eventually pull the shafts and properly clean/re-boot them, but I'm going on a very sudden 2500 mile round trip (NW Ohio and back this week), and I'd like to add a little fresh grease and get some of the milky, runny yuck out of the joints before the trip just for peace of mind. I have a grease gun full of moly grease at home for the prop shafts...should I just get a needle adapter and go to town with that, or run to the local Checker's and see what CV-specific grease they have?
Although I'm not a grease expert I'd suggest finding CV specific lube. The grease you use for drivetrain lube, axle bearings, etc. is too thick based upon all the CV lubes I've seen/used over the years. Not sure how you determine compatibility between Toyota CV lube and whatever you use...maybe look for something that states it is generally compatible?
