CV Axle Reboot or Replace?

Both boots are leaking and cracked, but seem to be functioning fine. Im thinking that when I pull them and after inspection I could decide that I need to Replace than Reboot, but would rather have all parts before. So was wanting to hear what some of your thoughts and experiences are in regards to the time/effort pulling them and life expectancy of the Axle. The LC has 150,000, majority of current driving is city, have kept with original LC replacement parts except Tundra rims.

You have to pull them out to evaluate the condition of them to see if you can just reboot them. I’d guess that at 150k miles of city driving and assuming no lift they are likely good so you could reboot. I am in a somewhat similar situation with a new to me LX with 142k but I have a leak at the clamp on only one.

I asked the dealer for the cost to replace the deal and they will ONLY rebuild (reboot) the entire axle and it’s $460 per side as you are paying for the labor to remove and reinstall as well as parts and labor for the reboot. A new replacement axle is approx $230 so my guess is the replacement will only be slightly more than the reboot and you have new axles.

Any idea where I can get a clamp to for the boot? My idiot dealer says they will only reboot the entire shaft. I’m not opposed to buying the tool as well so any advice would be appreciated.

I hadn't rebooted before and was nervous I wouldn't get it done quickly enough for the daily driver, so I went with replace. Truck was also at 210 ish. I got a few estimates to reboot and the cost to replace myself was too close to justify.

I probably should have went reboot, though I still haven't done it and don't really know how long it would take me.

When you say both boots are leaking, on one axle or two axles? If two, that'd further my notion to reboot.

Yeah Pfran sells clamp kits: CV clamp kit (10 piece)

But if you intend to reboot the toyota boot kit comes with really good clamps- get a loaner tool from auto parts store or buy for $20 to properly crimp them.

Keep in mind reboot is one part of a complete process “while youre in there”: wheel bearing repack, spindle bearing repack, replace diff seals, assess flanges, dust seals and hardware.

Thanks for the reminder... was going to do shocks the same weekend, I think I will do them another weekend when Im not so Greasy.
