I posted the original photos in the photos stickie a few weeks ago but the comments there were removed by the forum admin. I then posted it in the what have you done on your... thread and it probably got a little lost in there, so here it is here with the same text i used over at LCOOL.org and in the what have you done... thread here.

I got rid of the Safari snorkel and got a custom 4 inch stainless one from AUS4WD http://www.aus4wd.biz/ The plate covers up the holes that the Safari needed and they re-used the Safari mount point holes on the pillar as requested by me. They did a fantastic job.

The reason i replaced the Safari was because when i had the LC dyno'd ages ago they said the snorkel was a bottleneck. And it was even more noticeable when i got my performance exhaust fitted. This new snorkel addresses that issue and I can already feel the difference in performance.

I know people will either like the look of it or loathe it, but that's fine - i like it :) But as i said above - it fixes an issue i had and that's what i wanted.

^haha i am with him. Why did you take teh ARB off. Why not keep it and save the money for another mod?

Arent you worried about a critter crawling in that tube?

I was thinking the same thing. Or worse, some asshat messing with you in a parking lot.

Although that is the first I've seen that doesn't look like it would tear off on the first tree branch.

The guy didn't ask for opinions, just pics of custom snorkels. Please keep the snide comments to yourself.

Actually, he didn't ask for pics of custom snorkels anywhere in his post. He basically just said "here's my setup". I've been a participant of forums like this for 15+ years, and every time I've seen posts like this it's trolling for opinions and/or praise. I've also never been blatantly rude or belittling, and I wasn't in the above posts that were censored. If people can't have a sense of humor and relax a little, internet forums are the wrong place to comment.

obviously you have never dealt with the tbagmonkey. He comes and goes on his moody deletions. Dont sweat it.

on a tech note, what is lining where the hole where the snorkel enters the fender.

Also, it kinda looks like the huge, vertical stack pipes a lot that a lot of interesting pick ups in the southern US have coming out behind the cab.

Edit: according to the rules, if he just asked for pics mr monkey, shouldn't it be moved to the "pic section"

Just a thought as to why its still in tech if this is your reasoning.

Safari snorkel is a ram air, above 20MPH it's pushing air into the intake. The problem I see with this setup is the airflow going over the vehicle is going to cause a vacuum behind the snorkel intake and pull air out of the intake system ( or reverberate like when you roll down one back window on the 100, talk about a CH-64 coming in for landing). This makes it harder for the engine to pull in a lot of oxygen at higher speeds when you mash your foot down. The huge increase in airflow is great, but it's only effective at low speed. Creating a vacuum for your intake system doesn't make it any better than the Safari. All things considered, I think it should be weather "proofed" a little more. A good rain and the right wind direction and you could have a bath in the intake box. I would have them cut the top off and weld a mandrel bent snorkel head to help push the air into the engine.

interesting. I'll follow up on that and ask them their opinion. Where do you think i would see this reflected sensor-wise ? I have an UltraGauge and have the ability to monitor airflow. I already had the reverberation happening when the back windows are down before this was fitted. I haven't tested with the new snorkel - shall do tomorrow.

It has helped at the lower speeds and being a manual that's where i notice the difference - it no longer struggles for air. On the highway at our max speeds of 100 or 110km/h in 5th gear it's too early to tell if has made any difference economy wise or other.

As far as critters or the large huntsman spiders where i live getting in there (and vandalism) - i will be addressing that in the near future with a grill of some sort. I didn't get to read the above comments before they were removed but just bear in mind they didn't start with a blank canvas - there was a restrictive Safari there - and my current budget meant i couldn't afford to replace the guard or take off the current guard and weld up the holes and repaint it and then do a custom snorkel.

i wasn't trolling at all. It's to show that you can remove the Safari that i had - which is known to be restrictive - and replace it with something else. The later Safaris enter the guard further up and apparently perform much better.

I've already had comments elsewhere - good, bad, indifferent and very funny - and i'm not concerned by any of them!! (Although i am investigating it as a mini pumpkin chunker :) ) I specified and received what i wanted and it removes the bottleneck that was there previously :D

One thought that was sort of mentioned before by Nick.... since Dyno's are stationary I can see where this helps. But you don't get the RAM air affect of the safari on a Dyno. So yeah I can see how it could be a bottle neck. Or like you mention...the newer models safari deal with it better.

I wonder what the real world gains/differences are? At speed one is getting the RAM air and the other experiences a venturi effect. Neither of which I am sure how to Dyno. But, it would be interesting to see the needs if it could be measured.

Of course at slower crawling speeds it doesn't matter. The new one should breath better.

plenty of people run the safari with the head turned around. I dont think they have any vacuum / lack of air issues.
