Installed new speakers (Kicker 4 ohm 5.25 front and rear) a new Bluetooth Apple Carlplay HU (Pioneer avh1550nex) in my 80 (1994), and had some struggles. Used the Metra 70-1761 harness, read some threads, did as much research as I could. Still not working great.

No volume on phone calls was first issue. Saw threads on swapping front and rear speaker wires on Other forums and the YouTube.

Firmware is up to date. Phone update is current, iPhone 8. Music works, maps work, voicemail plays through speakers. Calls show they’re goin out or coming in but no speaker volume.

So dug into the front speaker wiring and realized the old harness was rewired at some point. The bigger gray Toyota harness that connects to the Metra with the power, ground, front speakers etc.

Anybody seen this or repaired it? Is it easier to get replacement OEM wiring and start over?
Sort of a noob so, and while I can figure it out, any advice is appreciated.

Oh, should have said the front speakers play and can be isolated on the fader, but they’re at very low volume and play the background track, like backing vocals of a song but not the lead vocal, like a dedicated mid or high track on a multi channel system?
Seems this wiring set up could be why the phone calls have no volume since the HU plays phone calls through the front speaker channel.

You ever figure this out? I don't have a curious wiring situation but I'm only getting sound to my knee speakers and rear roof speakers with a 2-connector Metra harness (amp bypassed).

If you look at the harnesses on the factory side and look at the metra harness you can see which wires in the OEM harness go where.

Check continuity with a multimeter from the harness to the speaker

Just looking at the splices they are right. Some have one color going in and another color going out when they should be one to one on those plugs

I didn't want to pull the harness apart and work with the wires because they were so short, so bypassed it and ran new wiring for my front speakers directly to the front speaker outs on the deck. Everything works as it should now, phone calls and music. That seemed like the easy button.

I’ve got plenty of wire on the harness, but might try to splice that front speaker out from the deck to the door also if I can’t quickly figure out the root issue
