I need to look into it but I wonder what the cost to swap an H55 would be instead of using the auto and buying the controller and converter. I too am worried about how well a 200k old auto is going to hold up.

Also, how is the a/c and cruise control going to be effected?

any obvious issues with running the 4BG1T in an 80? I know it's a little bigger, but is it too big?

It's larger displacement, physical size is the same as a BD.

Have the tranny rebuilt and put in the severe duty valve body. These transmission aren't a weak link, and why wouldn't a person upgrade the tranny if they're already swapping the engine?
I understand the cost, but if you're already elbows deep into the swap, you may as well go the extra bit to do it right.

Before these adapters people were doing these conversions with Dodge transmissions, 700R4's or 4L80E's with many hundreds of thousands of miles on them that had been overhauled and worn out a time or two over.

Transmissions can be rebuilt. There are no surprises in the Aisins, nothing expensive or special you need to worry about. The cost is the same as fixing a GM automatic or an H55. There are a lot more Aisin transmissions in this world than anything else.

If you do a conversion at 200K and a couple years and 50K miles later you start having transmission problems you rebuild the transmission. If you don't have problems you keep driving it. I would not rebuild a good working transmission regardless of miles at the time of the conversion. Do the conversion and the transmission rebuild at different times if you must have a new transmission. Avoid changing too many things at once.

These kits revolve around keeping your existing transmission. Putting something else in there, Toyota or not, is a different project, not what this thread is about.

In a short time there will be 1/2 a dozen of these conversions driving. The whole process will be proven out with repeatable results. Right now the adapters are available for the people that have been waiting for them, or the people that had no idea any of this stuff has been going on, here it is, you can mull it over, watch as other people do it and keep an eye out for a deal on a diesel engine to keep your overall cost down. When that $1500 NPR with a bad transmission pops up on craigslist these kits are going to be on your mind, you're going to try real hard to come up with a reason not to do it. When you do you won't regret it.

The AC and cruise and all your gauges will work fine if you buy the wiring manual and ask for help when you need it. If we don't have the answers we'll help you figure it out.

It's in our interest to make this as smooth as possible.

Wheeling- Why Isuzu over the Mitzu...? You seem to have been on this path for a bit now, help me to understand you choice.

My reason is supply, i can look on craigslist and find 30 NPR's and 5-6 with dead trans and under 3k. Look for a Fuso there are maybe 1-2 and all $$.

My second reason is the 4BD is a mechanical engine no ECU or other computers needed. Going with the A440 also removes the need for an ECU as well. I like how simple a mechanical diesel is, if you have fuel and compression it will run. No neeed to worry about a sensor dieing and leaving me stranded.

I'm worried though as to if the 440 in my 80 would stand up to the aggressive tq of the Izusu and cummins engine not to mention the excessive vibration.

I look forward to any swap updates.

The A440 comes stock behind diesels from Toyota. Granted they are a smoother engine but the 4BD is no 4BT its much smother.

Having said that my plan is to run an extreme VB and a redone low stall TC. Im trying to find a A440f out of a FJ80 to get started on the trans end of things.

A/C is not a big deal, just need to make lines from compressor to the LC lines. Cruise should be doable with the FJ80 cruise control module. Both of these things are musts with my swap so I need to make them work.

Power steering should be very easy to make work with factory lines.

Wish I had the budget to dive right into this now bit I'm going to have to collect parts and slowly get it all together. I have to say if you have a FJ80 and want to do this swap you are way ahead of the game, i need to get lots of FJ80 parts to make this work.

I am a big fan of factory looking swaps, i have done a few with other Toyotas.

So are these adaptors only for the A440 and will not adapt the A442F much like the 6.2 / 6.5 adaptors from Marks in OZ?

Or is the thought process just to eliminate the ECU for EMP bug out...

They have an adapter listed for the A442, only reason i am going with a A440f is i have a extreme A440 valve body and diesel torque converter with a diesel governor. I also like the ideal of not having to buy a 3rd party control box for the A442. If i was starting from scratch i would do a A442 and try and adapt the ecu to work with the engine. In my case i already have all good parts for a A440F out of a 80 series i just beed to find one. Anyone? Lol

Matt, There are 4 separate adapters here.

Cummins A440

Isuzu A440

Cummins A442/A343

Isuzu A442/A343

The A442 and A343 are different transmissions, but they interchange with one another, the adapters to fit either are the same.

I've got a 1993 FZJ80 with 174,xxx miles, I'll have the engine by next week plus motor mounts and if all goes well, the engine will be in the truck by the following week. Sooner, if I have time.

All work is being done at a professional, full service custom shop. I'll post pictures and results as I have them.

Frankly, this is a dream come true. The fact that I don't have to screw around with the drive train makes this feasible. Not just monetarily but, I don't have the time or patience for all that BS.

Cody C on this forum has a 6BT/NV4500 in his 80. He's had issues with wrecking the stock R&P in the 9.5".

I picked up a 4bta this past Monday. My preference was to always keep the stock transmission in my 80, but until I happened on this thread I didn't think it was going to be feasible. Now, I think the whole project will go much quicker and smoother, well the motor running may not be smoother.

Yep could do that, they are hard to come by. Most go with the engines for swaps. Not sure the extreme VB would work in the A442?

Its really a cost benifit thing, I hope to get a A440F from a 80 for $200-500 in good shape. The rest of the trans parts I have already.

Yes they are but a toy diesel is about the smoothest running diesel out there for a truck application.

I've seen A440's fail behind the 6.2 GM which is much more light duty and way smoother than either the Isuzu or the Cummins.

That said, i'm not saying that it won't work, in fact i'm very interested to see if it does.

If it doesn't a rebuild and extreme valve body and extreme TQ converter after about 4k should make it pretty bullet proof.

It would be a new cast bellhousing and billet flywheel if we were to do it. In order to cover the up front investment in casting there would have to be a demand for them. If there were ten interested in the initial run I could keep costs reasonable and make it happen. If it's just 2 or 3 I'd be upside down in casting costs for a long time. You can PM or call the shop if you'd like to talk about this.
