Cummins 4bt swap

I love a good ol 12 valve cummins as i have one for my work truck, but with the land cruisers already bulletproof engine, i cant justify the coin. My cruiser will outlast my cummins... but then again my 12 valve is fine (despite oil leaks), i think its just the dodge truck falling apart around its engine.
 
Got it. Saw "fuel economy"... didn't assume range; assumed, well... fuel economy.

If it's really all about range, not towing and not the cool factor, why not buy/build a tire carrier bumper, free up that huge space where the spare currently is... and add a second fuel tank or build a much larger single fuel tank.

Part of range, e.g. going very far, is reliability. Staying as close to stock (when it's Toyota) is a big part of that. as AggieLC said - it's hard to beat that 4.7 for reliability.
 
Actually, no...until now I was ignorant to this ;) Does cummins mention this on their website? A guy at the Toyota dealer claimed Toyota is planning (pending the succes of the Titan) a cummins in the tacoma and 4runner in 2018...I couldnt find anything on the interweb though....

Never happening.
 
I worked for Cummins for years ( field service mechanic ). Now work for the city...on Cummins all day. Trust me....what everyone says is true. Think tractor engine...with 2 less cylinders so it's balanced like crap. The 4bt vibrates like freaking crazy. Not to mention it is heavy as hell and very tall and $$$.

Everyone is excited for the isf ( 2.8 & 3.8 ) engine line. All I can say is long gone are the days of the engine outlasting the chassis.

I do not get why anyone would swap a 4BT into a 100.

A skid steer engine in a $55k truck!? Uhhhhh, really?

You can buy a TD 100 in Central America for $10k, factory TD. You do not have to live or be a resident in the said country to buy or register it there. Anyone would be way better off doing this and bringing it back up here, swap it all over to a N. American spec 100 or just leave it registered down south.

OP says he wants to drive from Alaska to Chile. I have done the drive from Wyoming to Panama and back twice in a super charged 2004 Tacoma. I had an aux 19gal fuel tank giving me over 500 mile range. Never really needed it but it was nice to have. I am leaving in a few days to drive my 100 to Tierra del Fuego in Patagonia. I am taking x2 jerry cans for extra fuel and that will suit me fine. This will get me close to a 500 mile range. There are a variety of aux fuel tanks available for the 100 including a factory set up.

What people who have not driven down south do not realize is that the speed limit overall is 45mph. Mexico has some 70-75mph toll roads but for the most part you are going slow. That means the 100 is getting much better mileage than up here in the states. I get great mpg in my 100 cruiser at 45mph. Another misconception is the lack of fuel down south. My Taco required 91 and I never once had an issue finding 91 at the pump in all of Mexico or CA.

Personally I think a 4BT in a 100 will ruin the truck. A person would be far better off swapping in a 100-series TD or a chevy v8. Good luck with the venture though.

Agree w. above. 2 jerry cans have worked for me on 100+ mile runs in US w. my way less mileage friendly 60.

No experience down south, but trust RMP&O. Shoot, if worried, take 4 cans for overkill!

Plus, figure emissions might complicate the diesel swap. Think additive here. Look at all the diesel threads for sprinters, fuso, etc. Talk is grab pre 2005 (i think that is the correct year) to avoid headaches (remember when computerized gas smog started up....lots of problems).
