Righto mate cheers. Should be okay for this one. Got me some scrap and a arc welder ;)

I'm an idiot. It was always suspected, but now it's official.

The problem: V8 sits too close to the firewall and needs a relief cut [not happening] or drive shaft length mods [not happening] or spacing the engine out from the firewall [happening]. Enter the holy grail of solutions: the input shaft extension. Thought this was put to bed. WRONG. Here's why:

This is stock:

This is with the extension:

Stock, the bearing carrier [?] rests on that shaft - not spinning. Extended it rests on the input shaft - spinning. I thought I'd get away with it by using a better quality bearing, but the carrier doesn't spin at all and is not designed to, and under full noise that input shaft may be turning up to 5000rpm..

Any suggestions on how to space this sucker out without a] spending $1k on a kit or b] lengthening driveshafts or c] cutting the firewall..?

whats wrong with changing driveshaft lengths? im about to do another set for my second '4 speed into a 75' upgrade. there are plenty of donor shafts and trans covers around to butcher/play with.

So how much of the firewall gets in the way? Without seeing it I'm guessing. Modifying drive shafts is no big deal, I can get the name of the people who did mine on the track car ( and others) it regularly sees more than 5000 rpm.

I think you have number of options available.
You could either:
Lift the body, with all the problems that involves ( steering angles and the like) OR lower the engine and trans in the chassis, or angle them slightly OR have that tube off the face of the gearbox extended so that it works with the same geometry as stock or I swap you my F for your 13b-t ;). Third times the winner they say.

Columbus didn't quit when he did the V8 conversion in the Santa Maria to get him to the States. So I won't quit either. There'll be no 2F'ing [thanks anyway oz] and there'll definitely be no F'ing in exchange for my 13B-T young man! But there'll be plenty of F'ing I can guarantee that..

Turns out last night a certain dozer driver we all know recalled a Holden pattern V8 to Toyota gearbox kit he had gathering dust and offered it up. Naturally I accepted. Heading up to grab it tonight.

Hey cult the thing with a f is its guaranteed to f'in fit even if ya 2f'ed and tired.

If Old man Columbus put a 253 in his boat we would still be waiting for the discovery of the Americas

Why do you think all the yanks like V8's? Columbus had to have run a SBH or he'd have never made it haha ;)

Well after a certain fixed top owning dozer driver bequeathed me a certain cast alloy housing, turns out the cult45 machine may just be a goer.

This right here gentleman is the solution: a bell housing to go with my bell housing.

How it all works is this: The J30 remains bolted to the factory Toyoda bell housing. The clutch fork sits on the factory pivot, and pokes though the factory hole in the side. The Toyoda bell housing is then bolted to this alloy chief. Then the alloy bell housing is bolted to the back of the motor - the clutch and pressure plate reside in here. The rusty shaft that runs through the whole assy. is activated by the fork back in the Toyoda bell housing - this pushes through, activating the clutch. Note the T/O bearing. The input shaft extension completes the deal. Now all to do is to a] give him all a clean up; b] bolt the whole show together and c] find out that it doesn't work and hack up my firewall ;)

Whoops, thanks cat! Owe ya big time!

Well, sneaky wasn't far off. 2L white vinegar + 1/3 cup of salt + 48 hours = raw cast iron sleeve shaft type thing.

Not sure how the brew reacts with alloy - especially old alloy - so I kept it away from that. Once it's done I'll flip her upside down and re-dip with a fresh mix. Then the T/O bearing comes off, then I'll hopefully slide that shaft out and pull it down for a full clean up and lube.

Came across pics of my Fairlane the other day. ******* I miss that car. Saw it driving last week too, first time since I sold it in '12. He lives in my suburb too..

In the planning stages for a future build so today I thought I'd do myself a little experiment. @catskinner and @andrews520 and @west aussie you boys will probably be keen to know that riveted 16" one piece rims clear stock 75 series twin piston callipers by nearly a whole pinky! Spun 'em to make sure. Unsure about the splits. Nonplussed really - got me some 16's ;)
