There's been a meet & greet in New Orleans a Toyota dealership.
The second pic is the truck at Bonnet Carre spillway;
third pic is the spillway; Mississippi river to the left, Lake Ponchartrain towards the right.... I presume the railroad ties reduce the water flow towards the lake in case of high water in the river.
Methinks the only time I've had a truck at lower elevation was back in the days when I lived in San diego, and rode trails out by Salton Sea...

Isn't that Metairie near the causeway? And, yes, the Bonnet Carrie spillway is about the only wheeling around NOLA - I went mudding in there with my Manual Steering 40 and had real joy in the ruts...

Yes - it's less than 1/2 mile to the water... I presume you passed by there a few times...
Haven't read up on the Spillway - there's an ATV area, no trucks.
We don't have any intention to drive the '80 in the mud there; we just decided to drive River Road as our route back north to Baton Rouge - that's how we encountered the Spillway. River Road has this interesting mix of oil terminals, cow pastures, refineries, old plantation homes and museums, huge petrochemical industrial complexes, trailer parks, fertilizer plants, and so on.
Isn't there a town called NORCO which is basically the petrochemical industrial complex that Superfund Site couldn't begin to describe?

Yes. Getting into that town from the South, there's the Valero refinery - you'll drive under the oil pipes that connect the terminal at the river to the refinery, going above the levee as well as River Road. That looks pretty big, until you go further, and you realize that only a minute fraction of the town of Norco is residential...
Anyways, here's a shot at the San Francisco plantation further upriver on our trip:

Gila Monster vs 80
First trip out since a few mods were done to the 80 - encountered a couple of gila monsters on the trip, this the first - upon pulling up to the gila monster a hawk was just a few feet from the lizard and they were staring each other down...the gila monster was very aggravated when I went to snap a couple pictures - never had one charge before

we watched one for some 45 minutes on a canoe trip years ago on a distance of some 20 feet to a small cave - couldn't really be bothered to move fast even though we threw a few small rocks at it - and then it disappeared in the cave eventually

Some night shots from last night up on Promontory Butte on the Mogollon Rim. Got a new camera, and still trying to dial in the setting for some star trails and Milky Way shots. Picked up a Canon 7D last week. After the Scouts went to bed, I had some time to set up the tripod. First one is looking SW after moonset and the lights in the lower left are Starr Valley/Payson, and the 260. Next one is looking NE over the trees (we camped on the edge of the rim). Star trails is a 9 minute exposure.
Great job on getting the 7D. One of the most inovative cameras out to date. We use the 7D for TV commercials now. Very versatile and pulls in light beautifly.
