The most common cause of death wobble on the '80 is panhard/track bars. Most often from loose bolts, but could be a bad bushing.

I will add a caster issue too .. didyou already check your caster numbers ?

I've had this very same thing happen 4 times now and been all sorts of confused as to what it is. I was thinking that it might be parking brake related but haven't had time to dig into it yet, and the problem is so sporadic it hasn't required immediate attention just yet.

I'm interested to hear what the final solution is to this... please keep us posted!

96 lx450

Well the lateral control rod (panhard) bolts were already tight. I guess there's no way of knowing if the bushings are worn unless I remove the rod. The bushings look like they're not going to come out easily or go back in without some serious convincing. What do you use to get those puppies out and back in?

Did you ever find out your problem with the wobble? I have a 96 lx450 with the same problem.

The stock lx450 springs are soft and when they get old , you can get a swaying feel to the suv.
I just remember having that swaying feel at high speeds on the freeway with my lx450. I know new springs would help with that.

I'm pretty sure this is not what your problem is.
I think your problem is different.

I have some thing like you described with my 92 fj80 and i'm thinking it might be in my front axle some where.

Good luck.
I hope you figure it out. i know it drives me nuts.

Sorry I didn't update this post. I believe the issue was the parking brake dragging. The parking brake lever was loose and at times the dash indicator light for the parking brake turned on while driving. I had IPOR adjust the parking brake since they were "rebuilding" the rear locker actuator (it wasn't engaging). Since then I've never experienced the shaking again.

Funny this thread got bumped now because my parking brake is loose again, gotta get that fixed. No indicator on the dash this time around though.

I just went out to mine and noticed that both of my back brake levers where engaged and not releasing. I had the same wobble feel tonight on the highway several times and I went ahead and tapped them with a hammer back in to release the brake.

This might be the same problem I'm having. Guess that's what you get with a 1996!

I have the same problem with my FJ40. I have rebuilt the parking brake and have changed the rear to disc brakes. I took it out today for the test drive and it is still violently shaking at 40MPH.

I have had this happen on other cars, never on my LC yet.
replacing the steering dampener shock fixed it every time. On my last rig, 3/4 suburban with 5" lift and 36" tires, I only let it happen once. brrrr.
I've seen it on stock rigs, crazy modified rigs, big ones, small ones, even ones that climb on rocks.
I can't say exactly why it happens, but when it does, it's pretty obvious. Scares the snotzle out of you.
From the outside it looks like one wheel is pulling left the other is off the ground, then the other pulls right and the first one is off the ground. The whole truck can bounce into the air. The only positive thing you could say about it is that after it happens you don't have to clean the bottom of the truck, all that loose mud falls right off. The bad thing, you have to clean the drivers seat.

parking brake

I had the bell crank freeze up on the parking brake too, it is a little scary 'til you figure that is it. Next time it shakes pull over and see if you can smell brake pad at the rear wheels.

Violent shaking fixed

I checked my steering stabilizer and where it mounts to the axle was loose. I torq'd it an now I do not have the shaking.

x2 on crowt!

Had this same exact thing happen to me, check the adjustment and condition of your rear parking brake parts, assembly, etc.!

Next time it happens when you are driving it, pull the hand brake slowly when it is safe to do so and it should make the condition worse or go away. If it does make any change, then you are on the right track. Open up your rear brakes and check everything.

Hope this helps bud!

I know that everyone is happy to hear that this problem could easily be related to the rear/ parking brake. however, and I do mean however.

I recently developed a bit of an unsettled wobble/ shake out of my truck if I hit an uneven surface, hit my brakes, or just a bump in the road. It was starting to drive me nuts. So since my girlfriend is coming in to town in the near future, I felt that it was my responsibility to make sure that this problem was corrected to ensure her safety.

So I've got castor correction plates in, new pan hard rod bushings front and rear. I checked my control arm bushings front and rear, checked my rear brakes for proper adjustment, checked for the nuts on the lower birfields for the steering linkage, and I also i need to mention that I have replaced all my tie-rod ends with OEM toyota in the past year; I even pulled off all four wheels and cleaned off any oxidation on the mating surfaces where the wheels meet the hub faces front and rear. I couldn't find anything.
Also, I re-balanced all four wheels, and swapped out a set that I had in the garage for comparison...nothing. :hhmm::o

then:idea:...
I did the front axle re-build last year with a buddy of mine. He and I are both experienced mechanics and I had no reason to doubt him or myself. However...this was a last resort, but I this needs to be fixed, soon!

wheel bearings? i checked the drivers side, nothing wrong; passenger side had very mild movement...voila! The passenger side wheel bearings were loose. I pulled the hub apart and pulled the outer bearing and hub...inspected the inner wheel bearing and all was well. Re-packed the outer bearing, put it all back together and torqued it all down. She drives like a charm! no more wobble, shake, or shimmy...:clap::beer::beer::flipoff2: drives like a champ! I know that the wheel bearing had to have been loose, but I was impressed to see that even the most mild of being out of adjustment and it created that much of a problem.

so, I will from now on go back and re-torque wheel bearings at every service interval...5,000 miles. I have access to it, might as well make full use of it.

had the proper pre-load, and the washer tabs were bent down to hold the nuts in place. my best guess is my helper torqued the wheel, didn't spin it a few times, and set the appropriate pre-load.

i'm just happy it's better now and that the issue was found before any serious damage occurred.
impressive how much a couple millimeters at the hub could translate into so much more at the end of a 35" tire on the road.
