had the proper pre-load, and the washer tabs were bent down to hold the nuts in place. my best guess is my helper torqued the wheel, didn't spin it a few times, and set the appropriate pre-load.

i'm just happy it's better now and that the issue was found before any serious damage occurred.
impressive how much a couple millimeters at the hub could translate into so much more at the end of a 35" tire on the road.

You can really feel it in the brakes.

Hate to bump such an old thread, but I just replaced my rear pads and pulled the rotors to have a look at the shoes earlier today....

Shoes looked fine, so I just blew out all the dust with compressed air, gave the adjusters a couple turns out and put everything back together.

I didn't bother adjusting through the access hole because I have to pull it again tomorrow as the inspection plate for the pads was bent my local dealer sent the wrong ones

Anyhoo, I went for a short test drive to get the pads bedded in and all was good

About an hour later, I went for a longer drive and felt a bit of death wobble while slowing down from 70mph

Pulled over immediately and checked for loose lugnuts or suspension parts, but all checked out

I figure the parking brake shoes probably weren't seated properly, so I pulled up the handle, put her in gear and gently tapped the gas on and off....

Felt tight, so I did the same in reverse and heard a slight spring popping noise from the right rear as if the shoes seated into place :hhmm:

No bad vibes after that, but I'll be pulling it again tomorrow just to see what's up....

Exat same problem on my wife's LX450 - parking brake cable is at the end of the thread, so I rigged up an extra half inch or so of travel. But it stretched that out now and won't engage again.
Yesterday, she goes down the highway and gets a nasty vibration (NOT sway). Tells me to fix it. I drive it and it's an angel, smooth as silk.Sounds like a resonance issue, which the steering dampener should fix (panhard is tight). I haven't ever swapped out that dampener. Any issues, recommendations, or other ideas?

I have had this happen on other cars, never on my LC yet.
replacing the steering dampener shock fixed it every time. On my last rig, 3/4 suburban with 5" lift and 36" tires, I only let it happen once. brrrr.
I've seen it on stock rigs, crazy modified rigs, big ones, small ones, even ones that climb on rocks.
I can't say exactly why it happens, but when it does, it's pretty obvious. Scares the snotzle out of you.
From the outside it looks like one wheel is pulling left the other is off the ground, then the other pulls right and the first one is off the ground. The whole truck can bounce into the air. The only positive thing you could say about it is that after it happens you don't have to clean the bottom of the truck, all that loose mud falls right off. The bad thing, you have to clean the drivers seat.

I have experienced this same violent wobble in my 80, have also recently totally nailed it and its gone now.

It can be a number of things needing replacement in your front end, usually not just one thing but a combination of all.

Firstly, have a proper wheel alignment and balance done, it can be all thats required sometimes.

Secondly, replace your panhard bushes, this lessened my problem but didn't totally get rid of it, you may as well replace your radius arm bush's while your at it.

The third thing that is a huge contributor is worn tie rod ends, you can either replace your ends with new OEM ones or upgrade to a higher quality tie rod and drag link with heavy duty ends. For me this has totally eliminated my wobble, i can drive all the bits of road now at speed and not worry about the wobble coming on or even feeling a slight one.

Another thing that can cause this is cracking at the mount where the panhard connects to the chassis and cracking around the steering box, check this thoroughly as its very important and can be very dangerous if you dont get onto any cracks straight away.

Little update on mine....

Turned out the left Parking Brake bell crank was seized

Had to hammer it back in place with a BFH to take the tension off the shoes

Pulled the cables off both sides and zip tied them out of the way until I can get replacement parts :meh:

I actually did the left side already (replaced bell crank, crank base pivot, boot, short cable, pins and horseshoes), but half way through I decided to do the right side as well, so I had to order up more parts and left the cables zip tied :o

No more bad vibes though

New owner of a 2001 LX 470 and I'm having this exact problem, had some random violent shaking above 73 mph and my brake light randomly came on. I believe I use the parking brake much more than the previous owner did. How would I go about freeing up my back brake levers?
