Wow. I'm impressed. Been considering this myself (upstate NY...) before things get any worse than they are.

I had my truck undercoated before I moved up this way and for the first few years would retreat it but probably the last time was at least 8 years ago. Now I'm ready to take on a project like this (while I'm in the middle of several others - changing springs, new brakes all around (including calipers), lots of bushings, different sway bars, etc). But I've been stopped in my tracks due to lack of a reasonable solution to remove all of the old undercoating (that is probably doing more harm than good now since water and dirt is collecting where it is cracking and flaking).

Anyone have any thoughts on how to do the undercoat cleanup before I can even start to think about rust prevention? I've looked around before but didn't find any hints short of sandblasting.

Great job.. Did you unbolt stuff or just work with it all on the truck?

Wanna come do mine?

Looks really good. I think I will be doing this as I have the same thing going on underneath. Did you do all of this is one sitting? Or over a weekend? Can the corrosion x can go over paint without issue?
Well it took the better part of three days but could be done in two. Again i dont want to profess that this is the "right" way to take care of the rust, I just wanted to document my findings....and hopefully this is benefical to the crew....and the properties of the corrosion-x are favorable to painted surfaces as well as corroded parts. let me make it clear that i am by no means a vendor or such, i just heard about this product and thougt i would give it a try.

No i did not unbolt anythig in the proces, not to say i shoudent have...

A wire brush and some bar and chain oil do wonders...painting underneath scares me unless you took it all apart and were able to get to every surface.

I like the idea of Corrosion-X though...is a wax or grease?

It doesnt seem to be either, but after it is on and you wipe you finger across, it does feel like oil. Heres a link to the fist page on their website. CorrosionX
they make a heavy duty version but the guy i talked to said it was real thick and messy, not really what i wanted all over my truck but might stay on longer. this stuff is neat as you can spray it on anything, including the engine and electrical connections. it did creep under the stickers on my battery and thay are peeling off now.

Cruiser rust eh?

Heres what I had to cut out of my door lol....... Now just use your imagination to picture the rest of the van.

Yo Superjuice....how is this holding up? More pics?

Holding up very nicely i tink

I fogged it again in November and March as well. Out of a gallon I have about half left after four applications. Well worth the effort I think, the whole gallon was only $80. It was the 15 hours of grinding and painting that was the real work, fogging only takes about an hour each time. My only regret is that i didn't cover the truck when i did it and had to clay bar and polish off all the overspray:bang:

Nice...that looks great still! Thanks for the pics!

And sorry if you talked about this earlier in the thread, but what is "fogging" other than what sounds like reapplication of the treatment?

What exhaust is that you've got on there?

X2 on the exhaust?

By using the engine cleaning gun with compressed air, it picks up the corrosion-x and creates a fine mist or "fog". The nice thing is it carries the product into the frame rails and hard to reach spots.

The exhaust is the new EMS exhaust (many threads on it) and has only been on for a week or so. I'm waiting until i have some more time to post a thread on the install and my thoughts on it. So far its pretty nice, a bit louder as advertised but i really like it. What i like the most is that its the last exhaust i will need to buy due to the fact its stainless;)

From your thread, did you wire wheel strip the rust and corrosion and then paint and then CorrosionX or was it strip and then the Corrosion X? I've been looking for it here in Maine and NH and cannot find it. I want to do this treatment and was thinking what better time than hot summer. Is it wax and drippy or will it stay on well? Thanks for the advice.

Its like a thin oil coating, it will wash off eventually. I figure every 6 months would be reasonable. It only drips if you really lay it on thick, not waxy at all IMOP. You can't paint over the corrosionX, it would have to be removed with something like paint thinner or brake cleaner, i forget exactly what is recommended on the website. So i took a pressure washer up close to the entire undercarriage, then wire wheeled and wire brushed everything i could reach. After that i painted pretty much everything with rustolium black semi-gloss. let that dry over night and hit it with the C-X in the morning. I think you could get away with a pump sprayer but it would get pretty messy. Its the consistency of marvel mystery oil i would say, but it creeps into every place it can reach, even vertically. that engine cleaner thing from harbor freight works pretty mint, There is a similar unit for sale with the C-X on some of the websites that sell it, that's where i got the idea. I bought my C-X from e-tackle.com - troll the web. hookup here. (he's in Massachusetts), i just checked the site and i bet a couple cans of the aerosol or spray bottles would do the trick but might not spray well upside down. I called and talked to the owner, i forget his name, and he said the aviation stuff is the same just in a different bottle. Nice guy, we chatted for awhile and i told him about IH8MUD and he sounded interested in getting the word out on the stuff. Give him a call and tell him what your doing and how you heard about it and he'll probably match the price on the other C-X sites. I just checked Corrosion Inhibitor, Stop Rust, and Protect Equipment with Corrosion X products - buycorrosionx.com and thay had a better price but shipping from spokane washington might be more, and take longer. Let me know if you need anything else, good luck and post up your findings, feel free to use this thread
