If this can be done anything is possiable but the parallel thread could be worst mod I have ever done.

YouTube - 27 Litre Rover SD1 reversing out Road legal in the UK - just finished his test here.

YouTube - Meteor engine SD1

Current project, owner is forever tinkering but it somethime goes to shows etc in an in progress state.

Depending on the state, that would probably be legal in the US too. In NJ for example, my 1971 is exempt from emissions. I can do anything I want to it as long as the inspector feels the engineering is sound. You can also go to the DMV in Trenton and go through a process to get a full custom permit... and you can do ANYTHING you want. My understanding though is that this cost upwards of 20K to have done.

Anyway... This is what I am looking for when I say crazy changes. Come on someone has to have put in a tank motor.

Back in the 70s in Denver there was a guy on So. Colorado Blvd. who put 401 Buick V8s in FJ40s. He raced them at Baja. I had one. It bolted right up to the toyota bellhousing. You had to switch the front and back driveshafts around and slide the tranny ahead. It was a great motor, lots of low end torque. 325 HP, 480 ft-lbs @ 2200 rpm. Mine was from a 63 riveria.

Also a lot of people swapped in chevy 292 sixes, they bolt right in.

I'm sure the Yanny would fit. The problem is that they cost $30K. They run forever in boats and have a great reputation.

Not really crazy
I like this .. Mercedes OM617 turbo ..........too bad the name MerCruiser is already taken
Merc-1.webp
merc 3.webp

Lots of room under the hood with that engine. Is this the mythical, long-awaited 4X4Labs project?

Edit: Yes, those pics are from the 4x4 Labs site.

That would be a CA-legal gas->diesel swap. Hmmmm......

I still want to see a Detroit 2 stroke diesel in a cruiser one day, I love the obscene noise they make.

Years ago on the LCML I had a discussion with someone about putting a Detroit 2 stroke diesel in a cruiser. It is just too tall and long... even if you went with a straight 3 cylinder from a airport tow tractor. You would litterally have the engine sticking out 2 feet above the hood.

I used to drive a V6 supercharged Detroit 2 stroke Hustler when I worked on the docks here at Port Elizabeth back in the early 90's. I was the odd ball of the hustler trucks that they had, everything else was a GM V8 Diesel. Let me tell you, nothing, NOTHING made a noise like that truck, nor was anything near as reliable or fast. I could stand on it full throttle and that sucker would hit the governer at 8000 RPM in a flash and it was smooth as glass. Frankly the throttle pedal was pointless, you could have just put in a toggle switch. It was either full throttle or idle because that motor begged to be floored. Nobody else would drive it because the noise scared the hell out of them. But inside the truck it was no worse than the other trucks. I would stomp on the gass when towing a trailer from a stand still and the front wheels would lift off of the ground several feet. Unfortunately I also remember comming home after working a ship all night and washing off my Diesel exhaust tan.

I will say this much though, they eventually replaced them with newer trucks with Straight 6 Cummins Turbo Diesels and frankly it was a quieter and much less dirty motor. Much more pleasurable to drive with a lot more control and more power without having to floor it all the time.

As far as engine sound is concerned... with me it is a tie between that V6 and a true radial engine. A Harley motor is 2/7 of a 7 cylinder radial... hence the hub and spoke crank, 240 firing, and the potato potato sound.
