Another problem I noticed while replacing my VSV is that someone must at some point worked on the intake. I noticed a crack in the intake around where a bolt holds the two parts together. Add this to the list of troubles with this truck. It is not near the gasket area but where a bolt attaches the 2 parts of the intake manafold.

Can this be repaired when I replace the headgasket or am I looking at purchasing a new one which would be big $$$ I am sure.

THanks

Andrew

Can you photograph and post it so we can see it. A crack can cause a lean condition that will also lead to heating issues. Has it triggerd a check-engine light?

dang sorry to hear that...

good thing, though, is that you may be using up all the bad luck around the cruiser community which would leave the rest of us in better shape...? sorry...

on the more constructive side, you might be able to put some solvent on the crack and see if it a) is sucked in and b) would help temporarily the engine? Could also put some goop on it to see if it makes a difference?

good luck

I cannot believe the trouble you are having with this rig.. the birfields can probably wait until your engine problems are solved, but not to be ignored. They are not hard to do and there is lots of info and pics on this site and others to help with the job. Who has been working on this truck..most Lexus owners I know never do any service work themselves on low mileage rigs. I am not sure but you may be able to have the crack brazed or welded by a qualified person..perhaps someone with aircraft or marine experience. I still would follow up with Lexus, maybe not the Jasksonville dealer. Someone in that company has to care that they have a vehicle out there with only 77K and so many problems. I have many clients who have Lexuses and all speak very highly of the service they get from the company and their representatives. Lexus may be interested in the fact that the Jacksonville dealer has been no help. Get that pic of the crack that C-Dan mentioned. I am sure some of the more qualified on this board can help with information on the severity of the crack. This may be the culprit in your preignition condition. Good Luck.

I am trying to upload a pic but the size limit of the file is 87kb (according to the error message I am getting). My file is a jpeg and is 278kb. Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks

Andrew

I used my photo software to shrink the pic until it was under the limit for this site

Sandman, did you loose a contact or are you taking a .....:D

Andrew, is the crack in the intake manifold (the 6 pipes that mount on the block)?
Or is it the air intake chamber ( the throttle body is mounted to it, it has 3 pipes on each side of it)?
The air intake chamber is on top of the motor and the intake manifold is under it.

Sweet truck Sandman. It is definately the bottom intake manifold on one of the areas a bolt goes through to attach it to the intake chamber. Let me see if this picture will work.

It is the bolt to the intake that is directly accross from the driverside tire (easy to get to).

Andrew,

Can you get a little better focus? Most digicams have a close-up setting. Also, another engine picture from a distance with some indication of where this crack is.

What I'd do is start the engine and allow it to warm completely. Then while running spray some quick start around that area is small blasts and look for an RPM increase. If there is a RPM increas then the crack is causing a leak and the part needs to be replaced/repaired.

Another tip on the photo is to take a high res shot at a good focus distance and then crop the area you want to show. This way when you enlarge that cropped area the res will drop but still provide the detail and it will be smaller in kb size and easier to get uploaded.

I will try and take a better pic later today. I am also going to visit the Lexus Dealer today again and talk to them. I read through the owners manual and the intake manafold is just out of warranty by 7k (part of emissions stuff). I am going to go their and explain that I am the second owner (which I am according to the car fax and other info that came with the truck) and see what they say. I have a hard time beleving the intake has been off this truck before but I may be wrong.

Also, I read through the owners manual and the scheduled service. It mentions repacking the wheel berings every 30k but does not mention the Birfields. Why would this be that means the Lexus dealer does not do what is proper and service the truck correctly. I went throught the scheduled service to 150k I beleive. Also in the service book it mentions applying grease to the stearing nuckle. Where is this nuckle???

I will let you know the results but thank you again for all the help

Putting 2&2 together. Maybe your truck is pining because it is sucking unmeasured air into the intake after the mass airflow sensor.

As for why does Toyota not service the birfields etc etc, I am pretty sure when the 80 went to full time 4wheeldrive they never thought about it much. The dealer considers the birfield area repair if needed area and not a service area. I don't think the dealer or Toyota could have foreseen the all the issues that might arrise.

Maybe CDAN has more info on this. I bet you that all the birfields that failed on the 60k mile drivetrain warrantee was replaced and serviced.

It is also impossible for a dealership to build up a knowledgebase about every single vehicle to the extend that speciality shops does. One would hope that Toyota should be responsible for that in their service bullitens etc.

Does anyone have an idea where I can get a used/new intake from? I would have this replaced when I do the headgasket.

Thanks

Andrew
