Hi !

Not sure if this question belongs here so please move if needed
I just saw a 5 Gal Scepter fuel container at Costco for $15 !!! pretty cheap and made me wonder what is the big difference of the 'consumer' version vs the more expensive military version ?
Is the military worth the additional $$s ? I just can't think of any, and the consumer version has a pretty handy spout all integrated , and most importantly looks well built
Thoughts ? Thanks !

Probably more appropriate in the Tools or workshop forums.

That said, do you have a link?

From what I've seen and heard, it definitely isn't the same. It is very high quality for a cheapo gas can (normal price $50 ish thoguh), but it does not compare to the military grade MFCs. Different (CARB) spout, thinner walls, less handles, different size cap... Still a very good deal and it will probably work fine for 90% of people on here, but I don't think you can expect to drive over it and have it survive like the military spec.

Those CARB nozzles are stupid. I spill more gas with those than I ever did with the traditional old Jerry can. The CARB spouts break after a few uses.

I have been using these gas and water cans for years. I carry fuel on board and never smell gas. I pitched the Kalifornia spout and bought extra yellow water spots. Work and pour great, and hold up to gasoline just fine. John

Civi cans don't look like this or function the same.

My Scepter cans hold fuel without leaking, pour into my cruiser easily, and last a long time. That is exactly the same thing I did with my military cans that I used with a previous rig.

If your in lust with the military, then go for it, but after nearly 8 years of it, I am just fine with Scepter.

I own the non military Specter fuel and water cans ,and I've used them a lot. As some other members have pointed out the walls of the civi cans are not as thick as the military ones. Now even if there not as "good" as the military one's, at their price point they work great for me.

never seen those at my local costco. Will look next time.

I love the military cans I have, feels nice and solid, I'm going to see what happens when I drive over one of these cans with the 80 :D

I've never seen them either. I always hang out on the two or three isles that contain the automotive/man crap while the wife pushes the cart around all the other isles. Then I hit up the food samples. Next time I will try to pay more attention to the other areas. Sometimes they make displays of random stuff in odd areas.

I ended up picking up one. They are going fast becuase they were out at two costco's that I checked.

Overall I don't see why these won't last a lifetime. They look very good and well made. I also tested the carb spout and as long as you opperate them properlly it was just fine... no issues (recommend you watch the video in the Scepter website)

I need to hurry and go back for another one ! Thanks for all the comments

I checked these out at my Costco in Overland Park, KS. They had plenty of them, and the price and quality seemed pretty good. I didn't end up getting them because the width of each is about 7.25", and my 4x4 labs triple can carrier is only 20" wide, so I couldn't fit 3 of these. I ended up grabbing 3 metal jerry cans from Harbor Freight ($39.99 each minus $8 off one with a 20% off one item coupon that they always have behind the register) that were the standard 6.5" width, and they fit great.

Oh, and the Costco scepters were on the end of an aisle in the middle of the store where they place all of the promo stuff.

Oh no! my Kaymar can carrier is 7" wide (and 14.25" long)... bummer!

(you sure about the 1/4" right?)

Yep, on Scepter's site I think it actually says they are 7.3" wide. I walked in with a tape measure and used my "laser eye." Oh and their site says 13.3" long and 18.3" high.
