So this whole lock down is actually turning out to be a real pain. Work is in chaos and I am definitely not going to be able to get away this weekend. I am thinking we wait and see how this all shapes up so am suggesting we put this off until 4/3-5 or at least revisit it the week after next. Of course if the rest are able to make next weekend awesome, post up the pics!

Here is the report from last year... 2019 Trip

Location: Alder Canyon in the Upper Coyote Area south of Anza.
When: 3/27-29/2020

In relation to Bailey's Cabin...

You basically take the trail to Baileys and at the Alder sign turn right. Farther up the way you come to a fork and want to stay to the right to find our epic camping spot by the creek. If you get into one of the washes north of the trail and miss the sign, you will come to the end of the line just passed Baileys, back track and make a left at or near Baileys and you will find the sign.

Many of you have probably heard of Bailey's Cabin. We have camped there, and it does have a coolness factor, but it gets extremely windy, there is no creek, and it is easy to lose your kids in the scrub brush. We went to Alder Canyon and found it very well wind protected, much more secluded, with a creek great for frog catching, dam building, and camping chair resting while you have a beer. It's good.

As for things to do, there are a number of trails and washes in the area to explore as well as hiking. I would bring my mountain bike and do some exploring that way.

Anyway, the weather is looking to be mild. This place is accessible for day or weekend trip. Any takers?

Shears and an electric chainsaw would be ideal.

I would be up for an overnighter with my 4 year old son, sat to sun, or just a day run. Lets plan on it!!

No, havent had time to even look at it, this week has been rough, with both my wife and I having full time jobs, no school, and two kids under 5 has pretty much eaten up the little free time I had without all this. So it will be nice to get out of the house and enjoy some fresh air.

Well with the governor declaring a stay at home order or whatever I think we will all need some fresh air.

State and County parks today closed all campgrounds (so our Aqua Caliente Hot Springs trip next weekend got cancelled...). The parks, at least prior to the governors order, would remain open to visitors. I wonder what Anza Borrego State Park will say about back country camping? I have been visited by the rangers in other areas of the park when camping (Sheep Canyon, Blair Valley), but I can't imagine a ranger coming to check on you there out there.

Yeah it's very remote and I don't know how they will handle this stay at home order. Right now the governor says they are not enforcing this via law enforcement but of course that doesn't mean we won't have issues in state park lands. That said, I don't believe this area is on state park lands if the green area is depicting such areas...

Oops never mind, this is state park land and the website says its closed so I guess this trip is more off than on. Let's revisit next week.

I'd suggest calling the park for clarification... tel: (760) 767-5311

Agreed, let's call this tentative for now. I will give them a call Monday or Tuesday and see what they say.

There is always BLM Land

Another option might be Thomas Mt. Checking the weather and it looks like it will be cool but no wind. Mid 40's all day.

So, out of curiosity, I called the number above and spoke with ranger Jamie. She said that at present the Anza Borrego back country off roading and camping is open for use and they have no plans to change that at this time... but said to stay informed in case that should change...

I can imagine a potential issue being that if you went out and set up camp then went to leave a couple days later only to find the gate closed and locked... effectively locking you into the park! I didn't ask her about this being a possibility.

Reason would say they would clear any area adjacent to a traveled trail. I believe because of the size there is some arial observation by volunteers.

Actually the only gate I've seen is going up Coyote Canyon for summer closure to enable the Big Horn Sheep to water.

Id say we plan on it, after all the most important part is the whole 6ft separation, we can def honor that.

So is the plan still in place to head out to Alder canyon this weekend. I'm ready to get out of town for a couple days and will probably do something one way or the other. Currently I'm planning on hitting the road around noon on Friday to beat traffic (hahahaha) and if people are still planning on heading out to Alder canyon I will busta move out there and post up?
