Hey Gang,

I'm thinking of flushing my 60 and am looking for what is the best coolant for the '87 60. I did a quick search and found someone who used Dex-Cool. I have an old article from '03 that states toyota used a silicate free coolant that is not available in the US. The article then states that any old american available coolant will do the trick.

Any recommendations?

Prestone.. any green stuff. You will not know the difference. Just mix it yourself 50/50 with distilled water.

right now my 85 60 has prestone green in it but everyone here swears by toytoa red at ungodly amounts of money.

I don't think you want to use the red unless you have an aluminum radiator.

Sounds like you can use either Toyota red or prestone green. The toyota brand is made to last longer since the additives are higher quality.

I prefer to use whatever green stuff is available cheap. I can change it out 3-4 times with new for the cost of a gallon of the Toyota red stuff. The green stuff works fine; I fail to see how the red stuff is THAT much better...

Red isn't that much better..

Use green with distilled water (any AL stuff you have will thank you)

PO had already switched to RED Toyota, works fine, Green worked fine in all the other vehicles I've owned built before 1996 (when I first saw long life colors).

Go green.
Change out the hoses now if over 10 years old, might as well do a thermo too if unsure of the age. it will probably be gunked up anyway...

Red isn't that much more. 12 bucks. You can always get an extra 10-20% off by asking nice. Sometimes they just give that stuff away!!!

Mechanics at my local dealer love that stuff and use it in all their vehicles, Toyota or not. Saves the seals they say -- or was it the whales??

The Toyota red stuff crystalizes red if it leaks, which can be ugly, or useful for finding leaks. Depends how you look at it. I use it 'cos i have a tech friend who hooks it up for me. I also use Toyota filters on my Honda and Ford too for the same reason =)

Warning: If changing from one color coolant to another THOROUGHLY flush out all of the "old" stuff. Also, use distilled water w/any coolant. Happy Draining!

Use the Toyota Red (long life coolant) or the new Pink (super long life coolant). It has additives that help lube the w-pump seals and it also prevents electrolysis between alumimun head/cast iron block. Have you ever torn down a Toyota engine that has only had that stuff in it? no pitting. There is a reason why it is so much more expensive, It works. My $.02.
