Considering 2014 LC - how to value it? (1 Viewer)

I don’t know if dealers are front running tariffs with existing inventory or not. But aren’t tundra’s built in TX? Or is it a percentage of assembled parts playing into tariff eligibility?
Yes, 25% Tariff on non-US parts. For the Tundra, I think that is about 40% non-US parts. So, if this was the case, 25% tariff on 40% of the declared value. Not sure about the inventory question.
  • Importers of automobiles under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement will be given the opportunity to certify their U.S. content and systems will be implemented such that the 25% tariff will only apply to the value of their non-U.S. content.
    • USMCA-compliant automobile parts will remain tariff-free until the Secretary of Commerce, in consultation with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), establishes a process to apply tariffs to their non-U.S. content.

Since you’re asking on a very Land Cruiser bias forum. The majority of people will tell you these things never depreciate, don’t even get broken in until they cross 1,000,000 miles, are wired better than aircraft, ….

Your depreciation question is a tough one. Much of it depends on where you live, is there a large cruser following in the area? And what the future holds in terms of economy and people’s willingness to pay >$30k for a >10 year old truck that gets 12-14 mpg.

Also, let’s be honest it more than 10 years old major things could go wrong (even with a 200). Does it have the new updated radiator?

If I have to commit to my guess I’d say best case scenario you lose $2k in depreciation. Worst case scenario you have to replace the radiator, water pump, idler, head unit, and do a top end rebuild. And are out $10k and take another $6k in depreciation.

Last thing I’ll say when it comes to vehicles is buy one as least often as possible. That is whatever you buy plan on driving it for at least 10 to 15 years. So based on what I know and have learned (in buying and selling cars for >30 years and selling Porsche for 4 years) buying a cruiser when you want a tundra is not a smart financial decision.
Well said.

don't forget:

head gasket
valley plate leak
timing chain tensioners
cam tower leaks

of course all these happens on a 200, only after you have passed 3million miles or 25 years, whichever comes first, since it is DAAAA BESSST CARRR IN THE WORLDDDDD

tariff effects on car prices in general might touch used cars
not a guy who made offer already on his 19 Tundra...

i bought a new car sunday ($5100 off MSRP) and a used car last week (for my son)... no affects YET...

but in the future - 100% what you are saying is true.

With all the vehicles you have, and the new ones you get, I think you need to adopt me. I don't eat too much, but, my dogs...

Come on over. 6 hours down the road.

We could use all the man power we can get at the farm, since all our employees will be deported anyways.

We even have Tundras you can drive = to keep it on topic

If you knew my old 206 or the unrestored duct tape and baling wire Beaver I just bought you would wonder about that last statement…

Haha. Alaska is full of those. I’m guessing both were in Homer?

You lost me when you started worrying about the resale in a couple years time.

The Tundra is probably the vehicle for you.

Well, yesterday did not go quite as planned. I wasted my entire day driving several hours to go purchase the '19 Tundra that I mentioned earlier. Unfortunately, when I got there there there were several things wrong with the truck that the seller was unaware of and I declined purchase. This particular dealer is known for his LC's and LX and had several in the warehouse. I ended up driving a 2016 LX570 with 104k and liked it quite a bit, short of being unsure if I want to live with Rioja red interior. As with most of this guys car, price was at the very top end of spectrum++. He did offer to ship the car to me if I decide I want it. While I was in the area I drove an equally nice 2017 LX, black on black, same options and miles as the 16 and slightly less expensive. It is probably my top contender right now. The only concern is that the backup camera lens is hazy/damaged making it unusable, I am waiting to hear if they can fix it before moving forward.

Back to truck vs LC/LX - You all are right, they are completely different vehicles and I think I could be happy with either as long as the Tundra is Platinum or 1794 trim to give me the added seat comfort. I don't need the truck bed since I have access to utility trailers, and the LX has plenty of towing capacity for anything I would do with it. I also feel like the LX might be easier to maneuver and park at my workplace where spaces are hard to find and often tight. My wife also liked the LX and would be more comfortable driving vs a truck if she ever needed to.

At the same time, jumping back in a Tundra felt like visiting an old friend and was perfectly comfortable with my back issues. I really do think I could be happy either way and I think reliability will be equal between the two. I can't find any other Tundras in those trims anywhere near by and even if I did, they are not much cheaper than the LX options.

I am still intrigued by the 14 LC I posted about at the beginning of the thread but as pointed out here, by the time I do the needed maintenance and repairs on top of the 38k asking price, I might as well look to the newer LX. You all are super helpful here and I look forward to participating in the forum if I get the LX.
