I’m looking at this one with 120K miles. It’s exceptionally clean but this is the pic of the undercarriage. I can’t get to it in person so thought I’d ask you experts….deal breaker at $18-$22K?

No. But that price seems pretty high unless the rest of the truck is exceptional and/or there are extensive service records

Edit: I know you say it is exceptionally clean but pics or it didn't happen

I’d walk away no problem.

If the bottom is like that I assume above the spare tire is worse. It’s hard to put a price on rust, it’s typically worse than you think once you dig in.

Did you specify year? At 18k if it’s exceptionally clean as you say that may not be bad. I’m seeing a bunch more rigs pop up here on the local (SoCal) OfferUp and fb marketplace for 10-25k (99-02’s sub 12 03-07’s substantially higher) and while many of them look rust free they still have 250k+ miles on em. I know the vehicle is built for 400k but that doesn’t mean I want to pick one up that’s over the 50% mark even if we’re talking averages.

Keep in mind anyone who has done any of the endless list of baselining defined over and over on this site is going to try to recoup that investment to some degree more than others. Also, anyone who isn’t crawling on this site day in day out is going to laugh at you when you ask if they’ve replaced control bushings or (insert any while you’re in there parts) when replacing the water pump.

Just the opinion of a mall crawler. But if you haven’t seen under that car with your own eyes to guage the actual rust scenario, don’t even think of any number until you. Take it from this idiot (me) who bout site unseen with pics very similar to that.

I'm in NH and just bought an 07 LC and I would pass on that, I had to throw away a perfectly good 3rd gen 4R due to rust so I'm very cautious these days.

However, if you aren't open to buying something site unseen and/or paying up, it may be worth considering. The AHC system tends to rust easily though so I would be careful and I definitely would put eyes on that before pulling the trigger, or at least get a lot more photos.

I am going to assume you are in CT (that rig is in PA based on inspection sticker) and the problem, as you are aware is that any rig that's been around here for 5-10 years is basically a disaster. However the prices are lower due to that. If you want something rust free you're going to have to go shopping out of the south or southwest and in my experience, aside from the forum, it can be hard to coodinate a deal with a private party on facebook/craigslist when you're far away, which leaves you on BaT or dealing with dealers so you'll have to pick your poison.

I decided just to suck it up and spend all the money on a low mileage example out of the desert and I have no regrets. The vehicles here look worse after 1 winter than my 16 year old LC does but I know that this will be something I can drive for 10+ years without having to deal with rust.

Good luck

Thanks! Yeah, it certainly appears nice but I don’t have the time to mess with anything right now. Like you said, if I must have one of these, I’ll just pay the price for something from the desert-ish country.

The first one I liked was from a Ebay dealer who is supposedly a “specialist” in these rigs selling used. Also in PA with a bunch of LX’s mostly packed with undercoating and I didn’t know better. It suffice to say that it was not exactly an experience with honorable folks. So, I see how this goes and will take my time.

Everyone sees everything these days of course so it all gets a little old. Thanks for the input!
