Compressor for large tires question...

The CO2 option sounds a tad limited given the size of those beasts and how often you'll need to refill the tank!
CO2 lasts longer than you think. if you're worried, get a bigger tank (15-20lb)

OK, I'm still proud of it...

A simple mod really, but it makes the EA unit a lot more fun.

I did a write up on it in 80s tech... Yeah, I should have put it here in outfitting. Shoot me.

It is -not- as fast from 0 psi to rolling away as a belt driven York. It -is- a lot more portable.

Also... I learned a lesson. It is -much much much- cheaper to buy an $89 compressor/tank/switches/valves at Sears and toss the compressor than it is to buy all the parts to source all the bits from scratch.

i've been contemplating a viair system like the one below

anyone have any experience with these? its 100% duty cycle @ 100PSI, i believe.

check their site

The ExtremeAire DC compressor on a Craftsman tank/switch assembly I built above is 125psi continuous duty. The compressor is rated at 150 continuous. The switches were all factory set on the Craftsman side to come on at 105 and turn off at 125. That seems to be working just fine for me. Keeping the compressor cool like that should make it last a long time. Having the compressor piggy back on the tank cut down on a lot of the plumbing. Portability is a plus until someone walks off with it, but until then it is a big plus.

YMMV

I have the extremeaire with 8 gallons under the rear end. I can air up my 37s then air up about 2 more trucks before the Viar trucks get done with their own 33s.

I would go Extremeaire with tanks for volume, york, or CO2 for those big honkers.

I have a Puma 12v w/ a 1.5 gal tank. Works great!

  • 125 PSI
  • oil-Less compressor
  • Pressure Switch
  • Compact, lightweight 28 lbs
  • 3.4 cfm @ 40 psi
  • 3 cfm @ 90 psi
  • Dimensions: 15" High, 14" Long, 5" Deep
  • 100% Duty Cycle
  • 30 amp draw
  • 1750 rpm
  • 60 dec noise level
I got mine from buzzard-gulch on ebay 3 years ago, looks like the have gone up a few bucks, they are around $200 with shipping.

Airs up my 4 37"s in about 12 minutes.

I plan on adding a a couple of 4.5 gallon storage tanks some day ...

That's the one that I am planing on using. Putting the pump in the back of the truck and have a 4 gallon tank that's going where the spare was.

I've had good luck with this unit. It airs up fairly quickly and have no issues airing up 8 tires (2 FJs) back to back. It does get hot, but it cools pretty quick too. Besides, it's Costco! Take it back when it breaks.

Here's a link to a review of different inflators.

ps. Keep the motor running and it'll inflate faster.

You have a link for that Puma model shown? I cant seem to find anything on that particular one.

Search E-Bay for Puma 12v. I got one from buzzard-gulch for ~$206 shipped.

whatever air compressor you have now, adding a tank to it will help you with airing up at the end of the trail. You can start running the compressor before you hit the end, while your motor is still revving, and get the tank full, then when you start airing up it'll take a little less time. A little.
But if you just air up to 20# or so, that should get you to a gas station where you can finish up in no time at all

The original 3/4HP Extremeaire puts out 4 cfm. The 1.5HP magnum puts out 6 cfm. A friend's york puts out 10 cfm.

20 lb CO2 tank here. equivalent of 1260 gal. of air. $20 for refill in my neck of the woods (Marin County, Ca). Can run air tools as well. can be done for around $200 or so.

I think there is a lot more benifit in CO2 that people don't know. I am totally portable, I can fill tires (FAST!), run air tools, lock an ARB or two, and inflate toys fast!

I have a 2 20lb'ers (free from a friend), and a fill is about 17 bucks and one fill gets me through an entire season of filling my tires (35's from 11psi to 32psi, and 12-18 trail runs) and the odd job around the house or garage.

They are bulky and heavy but everyone wants to mooch on the trail it is so fast.

I would say consider it, you can get a great setup from Ultimate Air a supporter of this site for the price of replacing one or two electric setups.

Just my .02

I picked up one of those MV50 type compressors from Costco for under $50 just to see how bad it really would be...

It actually worked GREAT!

I deflated the tires from 25 to 10psi for the trail....and afterwards took the setup out of the box to try it out.

I'm only going from 10 back to 25 psi in each tire, but its only about 2 minutes for each tire...which is totally acceptable for me.

I was expecting to wait there for like 10 minutes each tire based on other people's reviews of these "cheap" compressors...but I was pleasantly surprised.

It all packs away into a little backpack looking case and I toss that in the plastic bin with the rest of my gear in the cargo area. Works for me.

anyone with an oasis.

can you open up the box and snap a pic.

i have a york, and a superwinch motor. im gonna bold each end to fabbed steel box. i just want to see if its a direct drive shaft, or some sort of a gear. when im done, i hope to have an oasis for about a 100 bucks.

i just had a thought, no idea if anyone has done this or if it would be effective.

my porter cable job site compressor runs great on my power inverter. what if i was to take the compressor off the tank, mount it on the cruiser and set up my bumper as the air tank. any thoughts?

Anyone have any experience with the new "ARB High Output On-Board Air"? I was thinking of buying one of the MV50's but figured i wanted to get the ARB lockers also... will this new compressor work to inflate tires or will it crap out in a couple seconds!?

Anyone running these yet?
