Hey Dudes,

Since your rig with the 3.4L V6 5VZ-FE Engine has been around for 20+ years, you've probably logged a whole bunch of miles on it. One maintenance item that quite a few people forget is all those heater hoses at the back of the engine, the coolant bypass hoses under the throttle body and the oil cooler hoses along the driver side of the engine block.

This video came about because my buddy Aaron blew a heater hose on a 4wheeling trip in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains. We were able to cut out a short section that burst and we're luckily able to get him off the trail and home.

So, if you have a ton of miles on your engine, which I think most do at this point, this is a maintenance job you probably want to consider so you're not left stranded somewhere.

I hope you Dudes like the video. Happy Wrenching!
Timmy the Toolman

Thanks Tim, looking it over tomorrow. Also...I'm not sure you have a video with it, but changing out the heater control valve at the firewall. That plastic has had it by now right. (Sorry if this is already in one of your videos).

yes maintenance is generally the cure all. i ended up grabbing some of that "miracle" stretch repair tape to keep in the vehicle as well.

We didn't replace the heater control valve in this video because my buddy Aaron already swapped it out on an earlier date. We did show disconnecting the hoses one either side of the valve and disconnecting the cable, which is most of the job. The only thing we didn't show is unbolting it from the firewall which is easy.

I bought some of that tape too after our 4wheeling trip. Aaron gave me all the old hoses as spares to carry on wheeling trips. I've yet to replace any of the heater hoses, bypass hoses or oil cooler hoses on either of my 3rd Gen 4runners.

Didn’t know the Toolman was on here! Cool.

I just so happen to have all the hoses, heater valve, and radiator (bypassing rear heater) sitting out ready to swap this weekend. Timing belt and water pump too.

Yep, I'm on lots of Toyota forums. I'm assuming you know I have videos for the timing belt job. If you're using my videos, be sure to watch Part 2 and read the comment I pinned for additional information for the job.

Love your videos. Especially the video on rebuilding the rear axle using that tool off ebay.

I got bulk of the hoses coming from Amayama, thanks again Tim. My daughter is using your vids to do her HG project.
