I am thinking of mounting my CB and GMRS antennas to my brush guard . I was thinking of something this. I would have tabs welded to the inside the top bar, one on each side. I think the antennas would be out of the way but still be in a good posistion. The picture is a cheap mock up but each antenna would be on either side of the light. Thanks for your input.

The CB antenna will be very directional, you may not be able to hear/talk to anyone very far behind you.

first of all cb antennas always work best from ant over the positive pole of battery
so wherever you mount it it will be directional over the battery no biggie

Damn I'm in comms and I didn't know that, although I only touch cell phone stuff on the whole, but even so I have been looking into this sort of thing just last week.
Might watch this thread to see where it ends up.

Cheers

antenna location

I was also thinking of putting both on the P/S side of the brush guard like this. Note: The antennas I am using for my mock up are not the ones I plan on using.

I am leaning towards this set up.

If you take it into the woods limbs, brush etc. Your antenna is gonna beat up that purdy yellow hood,

I always thought an antenna worked best as high as possible and in the center of a nice metal ground plane. That would make the center of the hood on an FJ40 the best spot... :D
It depends on the antenna design. CB antennas are typically 1/4 wave which perform best with a ground plane. Other designs like some of the long whip antennas you see are 5/8 wave which is less dependant on a ground plane.

is that like 50,000 rounds on the shelf to the right of the Cruzzah?

I to am curious having worked as a comm tech for nearly 40 years, how this has any bearing at all, but I am always open to new revelations, cheers, Larry

Of course in a perfect world centered and higher the better.
As I mentioned above it depends on the design of our antenna, with that big center load coil the effective length of your antenna may be 5/8 wave. Do you have the specs for the antenna?

e999 was kind enough to conduct some swy testing (though not far field testing) of a 1/4 wave and 1/2 wave antenna at the 2m freq. Different mounting locations gave different swr readings.

The bumper mount pretty much sucks, esp for 1/4 wave. Further, the idea to mount so close together may have the cb acting as a reflector to the gmrs. Firestik recommends at least 24 inche seperation.....seems too close though

antenna mounting

The separation would be about 14". I will be using a four ft CB antenna and a 32" 5db gain GMRS .
I like the idea of this mounting as I can get into the garage without removing the antennas. That way I don't have to retune everytime.

Why would you need to re-tune every time you remove and re-install your antenna?
Once you trim the antenna to compensate for the lead length it shouldn't change unless you re-wire the lead.
