So I did a preliminary search and it came out a little dry. Maybe its my terminology, who knows? Anyway, in the DD 60 every time I am driving and looking to do some parallel parking or frankly just going to reverse at all, the gears grind until something (flywheel?) stops spinning so that the gear will go in without grinding. Its something I can feel through the gear stick that its spinning and when it comes to a stop I can then safely go into reverse without grinding. But I don't always catch it. Otherwise the trans and shifting seems totally fine. This has been an issue since I got it. Just more annoying now.

thoughts?

The reverse gear does not have syncromesh which allows you to shift gears without grinding, while all the other gears do. When the car is moving and/or the engine is running there are parts of the transmission that are spinning. Especially when the gear oil is hot, the parts may continue to spin for a few moments after you have come to a stop and have disengaged the clutch. What you are describing is normal, unless it does not eventually stop spinning. Try waiting 30 seconds or so before you put it into reverse. Does it still grind?

If you shift to 1st before reverse does it still do it?

Shifting into second then reverse works really well for the H42 and H41 transmissions that have been in my 40.

Yeah I've tried putting it into 1st then reverse and no help. Or rather if it does help it's really because the gears have already stopped spinning. If I wait long enough, ~15 seconds it's fine. But 15 seconds with someone behind you while you have yet to start your parallel parking maneuver is sucky.

All the manual trans Toyotas I've had like to be put into 4th right before attempting reverse. It's become a habit with me.

ever checked the fluid level in the tranny? low level could allow things to move a little more freely.
if i just try to nurse it into reverse it will grind, so the route is typically one fo two ways.
clutch, stop, remove from forward gear, clutch out, then in, into another forward gear, out of gear, into reverse.
or
clutch, slow to snail crawl(but still inching forward. AKA one half impulse speed), remove from forward gear, pause, pause, assertively into reverse. in a busy spot this is my parallel parking technique. there is no grinding, no bad noises..,.but it is sorta like the scene in titanic where they jam it into reverse.

dyno oil or man made?

Dino. I've promise the :princess: I will NOT go overboard with this truck (RIZZABELLA). Its only a DD until the other truck (RUMPLESHANK) is ready to go. So I am being proactive on stuff because I will sell it back to another mudder after I'm done fixing all the problems with it but I'm definitely not going to shine this turd :flipoff2:

Side note: otherwise BEST running stock 60 I have ever driven. No joke.

I'm with Godwin: anything that keeps the input shaft spinning with the clutch disengaged will cause reverse to grind. Such as sticky pilot bearing, sticky clutch plate (from leaking coolant), etc.

Worn out pilot bearing, sticking clutch disc spline, poor disengagement of the clutch (ie: throw is not properly adjusted, or the hydraulics are weak).

Worn pilot bearings are not uncommon.

Well just drove around and did a bunch of testing. Doesn't matter which gear I throw it into before going into reverse so I guess that would narrow it down to pilot bearing. So long as its not making noise or slipping I'm going to ignore it for now. :P

just think about the pilot bearing thing for a moment.
if the bearing is poo poo and "sticking" and keeping the input shaft to the tranny spinning....putting the tranny into a forward gear, from a stand still would a challenge....try doing it with the clutch engaged and the motor running.
you would almost certainly get noise from the spent bearing when setting still with the tranny in gear.
