have been wanting a cold air intake and found the perfect piece today at walmart. It is a stainless locking storage jar about 8" in diameter. I believe the fender is not much cooler than the engine bay and so I made a slight modification to the fender to allow cold air ducting to go through the fender. note hoe all you have to do is remove the pass corner light and bend the shown tab inward to allow ducting to pass out the hole. I baught the ducting at autozone in the ricer section. it is 3", comes with 2 couplers, is 28" long and costs $20.

my current k&n filter has a 3" opening, is 6" diam at base and is 6" long (not including the coupler at back)

I have a 3" hole saw so I punched a hole in the bottom of the stainless storage jar and in the plastic jar cover. holes are offset in positions convenient for my turbo set up. cleaned up the sharp edges with a dremel sanding drum.

Then i punched a 3" hole saw through the inner fender to feed the ducting

that plastic gray square piece bolted to the clear cover is also available in the ricer section of autozone

wrapped up tight

if it a rainy day outside and you are worried about sucking up water just upen the door on the jar. note that I dont have the blinker lights or that fiece of facia that houses them as I removed both with my front bumper build. if you still have those pieces your ducting will be better covered and less water suckish
Gotta love walmart

so the total
ducting $20
gray piece bolted to plastic cober $6
wal mart stainless jar $12

total $38 for me

I think the oe filtering system could be made cooler if ducting was run to the front of the fender as shown-no holes would need to be made in the fender either-just yank out all that plastic crap in the fender. the trade off would be in filtering ability. the oe set up is pulling hot air from that fender but it is cleaner air

VERY innovative......is that metal canister going to conduct alot of heat? maybe wrap that thing in some insulation. Nice

This is interesting. Personally, I think it looks ridiculous ~ a little too much like the Back to the Future Delorean with the food processor on top of the motor, but what the hell. If it works, great.

I'd be interested to see how it affects mileage. I seem to remember other similar cold air intakes with the oiled filters not helping out much if at all, and at the cost of decreased MAF sensor life.

I gotta give you props for ingenuity, though.

wow...

Very Macgyver-ish...

Use as little oil as possible when reoiling those after future cleanings.

How does it sound?

Dusty,

I too have been considering what the best method is to get some cold air up into the inner fender, although it would be used with the stock filter set-up.

I've run the gammut of ideas through my brain, from fender louvers, modified snorkles, to ducting, and basically came to the same conclusion as you; ducting to the front. The problem as I see it is, unless you have removed your blinker as you've done, there really isn't a place for the cold air to enter this ducting. I've thought about a way to cut-up the left front blinker, or even to find a smaller unit to stick in place of the OEM blinker, so that the remaining cavity could be used for some free-flowing air, but I haven't pursued this yet. I've also thought that a guy could cut-up some of the sheet metal behind the headlight to make a way for this ducting to go to the grill area.

Since I haven't removed the inner fender, or headlight yet, and don't really know what might or might not work well, what would you choose of the two methods that I've described?

Thanks for putting me onto some more products and ideas!

Robert

Mag-lights and cookie jars, ingenious and creative. I like it. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

If a snorkel was installed then you could hook it up there, unless you are going for a cleaner look without a snorkel.

photoman has made a modified pass corner light to allow more air into fender. I dont see why you couldn't ditch your turn signal lights and clean up the holes in the facia. then you could run ducting there. just put your blinker lights in the corner lights like myself and others have done
Recently there has been much talk of venting to hood and fenders but that takes guts to hack your truck. I think the best answer is the snorkle but that requires guts and money.

I have seen new aftermarket 80 series fenders on ebay on many occasions for $169. At that price we could all be chopping the hell out of these trucks and putting putting vents everywhere. I personally would love to see someone lift the wheelwells up about 4inches with new new sheetmetel and then stretch the fenders out about 4 inches for a prerunner stance.

And who wouldn't want that crazy deloreon from Back to the future? My truck looks less like toyota intended every day but it works.

Very inventive, I like it. Good to see more stuff outside the box.

The intake is a bit low. Do excercise caution when you get around water.

You shouldn't have too much trouble with the flour can if it is stainless. Cheap stainless is better than steel but still conducts heat readily. If it's non-magnetic you have a good airbox that won't conduct heat very well (good thing).

I realize that youhave the intake behind your bumper but as MSG mentioned it should be no trouble to install a snorkle and use your new airbox for clean, cold air that is far above any water you encounter.

Nice work!!

you donate that money or the tools and time and I'd do it to my truck in a SECOND front and rear......That is on the list of to do's, but in the "no cash for it" section of the list. Don't know about stretching them out 4" but a few. Metal tech did that a little to the orange 80.
