HI! I have 2 coils that I'd like to use as trail backup. One is a MSD blaster 2 coil, and the other is a stock FJ40 Toyota coil for electronic ignition. I have the 1971 toyota coil and distributor with pertronix ignition. Can I use them? Do I need a ballast resistor even if I have a pertronix ignition?

Thanks

I'm not 100% but even on Mallory's electronic, they use the ballast resistor.I don't think it would hurt if you used it and didn't need it,but vise/versa could be an issue.

Keep the ballast with your trail replacement coil and wire it to attach in-line quickly.

The Pertronix ignitor is compatible only with a "points style" coil ( ballast resistor needed).. whether it be internal or external.....

I replaced my dizzy with new one I got on MUD had new pertronix.I ordered coil from DOWNEY and this combo runs and starts very good.

Whether a coil uses a ballast resistor or not depends on the coil itself. Often it will say something like "resistor type" on the label. Otherwise they are all pretty much the same.

Ignitors need the full voltage and should be wired upsteam of any resistor.

Thanks for your help! I will ask another question.... How many ohm do I need for a 1971 FJ40? There are 2 models of Pertronix Flame thrower coils , 1.5 and 3 ohm?

PerTronix - Coils

The mfg. recommends 3 ohm....

Then I guess that my MSD blaster 2 is not a good choice because the resistor is 0.8 ohm..... I'll go with the flame thrower coil if the OEM is too expensive!

thanks for your help:cheers:

Or you could use the 0.8 ohm coil with a 2 ohm ballast resistor that you could get at NAPA for a few bucks.

That is the way it works.
