I'm off that weekend. :D

I would like to go even if the truck isn't ready to hit the trails and just ride with somebody. I want to check the place out.

I'm in for this weekend and I have an open seat too....

I'm leaving here in about 30min or so.

I was only there on Saturday, but we covered some ground. We did trails 35,27,26,44,49,48,6,5,19,20,and 4 (less than a 1/4 of the park's area). I think we started around 10 and were done by 4. We didn't stop much. This was more of a moderate route with only a few sections being rated difficult. CC only really has three ratings, gravel, moderate, and difficult. However there are a some extreme trails sprinkled here and there.

there were some pretty good hill climbs, but we did not have enough time to cover a majority of the park trails. You need 3+ days of serious dedicated trail riding to get a feel for the place in my view. Most of the stuff we were on was not a crazy challenge ( I made it through with the 60)... but then we only went on a portion of the trails. Profo or someone more familiar with the overall trail mix there should comment on the question.

As per Roger's request, we steered clear of the difficult trails and tried to cover a lot of ground. As Elbert says It would take a week with some serious effort to cover a majority of the park. With a few exceptions (trail 44) what we covered was for the stock or slightly modified crowd but certainly not graded gravel roads. Would be perfect for all you Overlanders.

The harder trails are there just do a Youtube search for trails 3, 39, Rail Trail, 75, 45, Cadillac Hill, Atomic Ridge, 15, Rattle Rock, Little Rattle Rock, etc.

The park has 320 miles of trail. 20-30 miles is difficult to extreme, some is gravel roads that connect the trails and I doubt that a well equipped small group could could cover the park in a week. There are trails that leave the park and enter Frozen Head State park and North Cumberland OHV area( formerly Royal Blue), so the expedition folks could spend a couple weeks with out redoing trails.

Since you seem to be the most familiar with the park maybe you can give the one's that have never been there (like myself) an idea of how far these obstacles and harder trails are from the camping area? Like is it an all day trip if you go to one of the harder sections? Are there any that are close to camp? If they are away from the camp site, is it 10 mins? 1 hr? 2 hrs? etc?

I don't have a hardcore rig myself but I would like something challenging.

On another note, I took your suggestion and searched a couple vids on YouTube. The area is beautiful up there! I could see spending a week or two cruising around up there for sure!

Most would be half day trips. Some like 39 and rail trail would be all day trips.

15 and rattle rock are the closest and probably 30 minutes from camp. However I have heard and seen the easiest trails at Windrock take all day. Windrock is a huge, vast place and nothing is easy. I always prepare for all day trips. I don't know how Windrock is getting a reputation for easy or not being hardcore enough. If you can't challenge yourself at Windrock you aren't trying.

That's some good info. I think that being able to do a morning run and be back at camp for lunch, relax a while, and head back out for an afternoon or evening run is good.

Personally, my reservations have nothing to do with the park being challenging or not. It's more to do with the scale of the place. It's going to be a big difference from GMP where you run into everyone on the trails (and the occasional traffic jam..) and can make multiple runs in one day easily. People are just going to have to plan a little better for being out on the trail longer and if you want to make a run with an old friend, you better set it up ahead of time. And try not to break when you're 3 hrs from camp!

better planning, running and staying with a group are all good tips.. I've always been impressed with most everyone's willingness to help others on the trail. Given the scope of the park it might mean a long time to get back to camp but that's not a negative to me....it just means there are far more opportunities to explore different trails and see what can be attempted.

The fun is working to complete challenging trials for the type vehicle you have and your experience base.

I got towed all over Skyline one time when my clutch slave tore up... I would do the same for anyone who had to be towed back in or whatever.

in my view its far more interesting to see and do things that may not be right next to camp....yeah if you have mechanical issues then it makes it more difficult but that's part of the game and not a negative.

I know everyone has different perspectives but I enjoy driving the trails...not stopping every 5 min.. I would rather be out there all day . A lot of time is killed running back to camp or whatever....if I were in my "home" area that would be different but not when you load up and drive a long way for the entire purpose of trail riding.

But given all of that.....it would appear that Coal Creek has more trails to offer....therefore those who wanted to come back into camp certainly can and those who are interested in hitting the trails all day certainly have that option.

When I'm on the trails I want to stay out there and ride as long as there is daylight...and even more if you can safely do it with less light. My objective is to explore the max trails possible for the given hours available since normally I end up having to drive a good distance to get to the park or location to start with.
