Update, the thrill of wheeling in Moab still outshines my troubles!:moon::moon::moon:
You suckers had three years to join in on our little adventure!!!
Elbert, love ya man, but you left way to soon.
Yeah, I'm overloaded, yeah the government took all the lubricity out of the low sulfur diesel fuel, yeah GM has made four more generations of Duramax and the technology has gotten better, yeah I can't afford to buy a new $75,000 truck, yeah these repairs are costing me a ton of damn money!:crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:
But in the long run when I'm finally in that retirement home sitting in my piss filled diaper, I'll have the memories of this trip until I take my last breath:flush:.
So why didn't you come with us??? Only you can answer that:cool::cool::cool:.
So the next time the hendog and Bruno tell you the saddle up, you better get your damn mule and head my way cuz this ain't nothing but a little bump in the road of life:rainbow::rainbow::rainbow:.

no...thats a big pain in the a$$ job right there.... I know they generally pull the cab on turbo swap...cylinder head jobs. Thats crazy...timing of that could not be worse, but I guess you gotta fix what's screwed up. Hate to to learn of that kind of repair. Looks like some type of different transmission cooler and or electric fan on there.. Sorry to hear of all of that...I thought it was something on a more minor scale.

Not sure it would not be a wise step to consider ARP studs on the heads....dont' know if thats a common path on a dmax or if studs would create any issues with head removal on the v8.

Seems like $$$ just burns left and right. I always seem to have two or three things screw up....not just one.

Yeah I was being a bit facetious. Hendogs got that motor a little tweaked up in HP so he can drag 15 tons of crap around. :steer::steer:

Money can be replaced, memories can not and I know I knocked off a bucket list item for sure. :smokin:

Damn son! Sorry about the tow rig Henry!

Think Domino Effect here: I knew what I was in for when I started fixing all of the GM engineer mistakes, with aftermarket engineering (500 hp on stock injectors, 1000ft/lbs torque) ! Up until June of 2006 a multi layered head gasket was used (Weak link--- One of many!)
They never foresaw the low sulfur diesel fuel our "Know it all Government Experts ", would force on us.
It is basically the ethanol fuel of the diesel world. ( Fuel pump is lubricated by Diesel fuel)
You realize the Duramax fuel pump puts out over 25,000 psi? Basically vaporizes the diesel fuel and makes it more volatile.
Two issues became apparent during my trip.
I knew this head gasket issue was coming. You just never know when!
Still my truck is paid off, has been a long time, and I've got more miles to squeeze out of her.:smokin:
If anybody wants advice on the Duramax series of trucks, I think I am well versed in the cost and issues.
Yes I have looked into buying a new truck, I know all about them also! Give me a call.

@Elbert
Finally got a little done moving pics around. Here's the one you've been waiting for.

Oh!...so GM is getting a little payback for tuning and hot-rodding? Tell us what all crazy $hit is on this truck...so we can live and learn :)

yeah I did leave too soon. Next time I'll try and stay longer...sometimes my sleep issues just get in the way on having fun.

Henry's coming out of retirement ?

Damm when it rains it pours . Good Luck Hendog , if needed I can come and tow your junk home ( D Max included ) with my Super Duty .:moon:

I'll call Donna and have her pray for you and your D Max .:rimshot:

All kidding aside I really hate to hear all the trouble you are having . It sucks being far from home broke down .

Hey big talk here- Bottom line I didn't see your Super Duty @ Grandpas Garage, touche'.
I'll be alright, now I will be able to drive for groceries on the #5 setting!

Spent $$$ on Fuel system from tank to injectors@ 130,000 hard miles.
More and better fuel = ability to increase workload.
Punched up the hp there.
Transmission got tired soon after a few months of highway justice being dished out on the mean streets of Atlanta! Also an expected expense. Followed by the mechanics advise to be prepare for head gasket issues.
Put the 3,500lb camper on her back pulled that steel car trailer and cruiser load all over those 14 thousand foot passes in Colorado. She never missed a beat till now. Yes she has dents and stained carpet, but she's not dead yet.
If I was going to spend the crazy big money for a new truck, right now, I would go with the Ford
( Engineering and political reasons!).
There are problems with early ownership of a new vehicle. Also newer diesels are hindered by strict EPA regulations.

Keep it stock, and enjoy the warranty, piece of mind. But you can play me now, or you can pay me later, but you're going to pay one way or another suckka!

My truck has been payed for a long time!!!
It has definately earned her keep in my stable! After seeing the cross hatches still in the cylinder walls , we know she's easily good for another 100k.
The shop will upgrade the head bolts, and mack daddy head gaskets, and I will continue to love her with clean oil and filters, like she needs.

We have kept the wife in a new vechicle my whole married life (28 years), the kids have destroyed a few BMWs while learning how to drive with some of the worst drivers around.
(safest small car around! I personally have cut out a few dead teenagers from other junk!)
For now I will live with the decisions that I have made and the money I have spent, and still be out in the woods more than most people!
These are minor problems, for god sakes, I had a brain tumor @ 37, people, now that's a serious problem.
You know I'm unbalanced right???

If I were to buy a new diesel of any brand I would play it stock through the warranty period, then I might modify certain exhaust components...and or make some minor tweaks. I know there are some better turbos and inter-coolers at times that come out. Anyway overall stock would be the path forward for me on tow rig. I think if you stay within your weight "allowance" towing you'll be far ahead with regard to maintenance cost and be careful what mods you do. Some of these tuners can really alter the performance on the engine, but the engine/transmission may not be capable of handling that performance over time, certainly in stock form.

Back to the trip thing.....I think it would be great to go back to MOAB and or do some other trips like that, especially if we can coordinate with a local person or have a good understanding of the local area/conditions. An would be good to avoid extreme weather...either hot/cold. Obviously some places the temps in the summer get crazy and while the winter things get cold....snow/ice issues can make things really problematic. (would not be my idea of fun being stranded in the tow rig on the side of the road on some long mtn pass or in general due to weather).

With my work like I'm sure with many....the more time in advance I have to plan the better off I am with getting time off approved. In my case its almost impossible to get time off in the month of Sept due to the specific things we have to deal with @ work. Anyway...great trip and great place to visit.

Likely I'm on the hunt for a 4wd / crew cab something...tow rig, I should have bought that in the first place.

I don't think the weather could've been much better than what we had for those two weeks. 50's at night, 80's in the day, and only minor rain on the Monday we first hit the trails and the Saturday we departed. Although Danny did say that that was a bit warmer than usual for the time of year.

We have learned many a lesson this trip!
Ray Towner (Florida Panhandle) is planning to go next year.
I may try to hit Cruise Moab, because of my contacts with the Rising Sun Club.
Because I definitely had an awesome time there!!!

Traction, like you have never seen!

Saying "traction like you have never seen" is a flat-out lie for anyone who's ever been to Katemcy. :) Moab's "slickrock" doesn't hold a candle to the traction at K2.

Addendum:
That was supposed to come out a little sarcastic (since I've been to Katemcy) but I think it was more like snobbish (since most of you have not been). Sorry

Who cares. Where the hell are yall's pictures?
Same problem I always have, I don't have a fast enough connection to post up more than a few at a time. Gotta bring my computer in to work and do it there some day.
