Update as of GSMTR:
East coast contingent departs for Moab on October 4th!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original post with edits:

At this point some of you are gonna start giving me crazy looks and tell me to quit planning and suggesting things - especially things so far away and so far out on the calendar. But there's a reason: At the end of 2013 I may be away from wheeling completely for the following 4 years due to transferring back to sea duty. There's a tiny chance I'll get to stay at a shore duty somewhere, but its not likely so I'm going to try to plan one huge trip to hit some stuff out west before I potentially have to mothball The Gecko for 4 years.

Keep in mind this is only tentative at the moment, so I'm looking for suggestions and input (and company), but I am very serious about making it happen.

EDITED:
Right now I have it on the calendar for October 16th-31st. Planned it there so I could have Columbus Day as a free travel day at the end. This would allow me to only take one week (5 days) off yet have 9 full days for events and travel.
Trails in mind are Holy Cross, 21Rd, Moab.

Other trails for consideration: Montrose, Carbondale, Ouray, Billings Canyon, Bangs Canyon, Chinaman Gultch & Carnage Canyon (A little out of the way),
Preferred trails in Moab: Pritchett Canyon, Steelbender, Golden Spike, Metal Masher, Kane Creek, Hell's Revenge, Rusty Nail, Helldorado...
Other possible Moab trails: Behind The Rocks, Elephant Hill, Top of the World (photo op), Poison Spyder Mesa, Gold Bar Rim...
- Area BFE trails: Coyote Canyon
(Suggestions welcome, post 'em up)

EDITS: Removed Rangely as an option. Reason- too far out of the way.
Added Coyote Canyon in BFE as a possibility (with link)
Added hyperlinks for some other trails.

you have my attention. Could always leave on on Labor Day weekend and accomplish the same thing but get the cooler weather (if a week or 2 makes a difference that is)

come on man, the Indians used to drop 'em in da woods. One minute there was 1 food gatherer, the next... 2 :D

I really want to do a trip like this but I'm out for 2013. Maybe in a few years. Heck, the wife would be all over a trip like this. We just have too much going on with the little one and too many trips already going on.

Let's plan one for 2016. :D

Nah, the holiday ("free day") has to be at the end. That way I can depart on a Friday after work, have S,Su,M,T,W,Th,F,S,Su,M, and not have to be at work until Tuesday. All the while I only have to take the M-F, 5 days, of leave from work. Make sense? I could have it up front and that may save me a day of leave time, but it would also cost me a day of the trip cause I'd have to be back on Monday vice Tuesday.

Well I've been talking with Lenny from CLC and he says late August is gonna be about the hottest time you can pick apparently. He was there in mid August and it was triple digits in the daytime and mid 60's at night. I'm looking for low or mid 90's max daytime temps and high 40's at the worst for nights.

All that being said, I'm now thinking about moving it back considerably. Where I'm looking at now, simply to utilize another Moday Federal holiday, is to the second week in October. This would have me back in Memphis on Monday, 14 October (Columbus Day holiday). I haven't yet researched just how much the temps will change over that time. Another major consideration if this happens though (for you primarily Sid) is that the SCC may have to be skipped as it'll probably be the next weekend. Or, I guess if I have the trucks and they're not broke, I may be able to make it to SCC a few days later. We'll see.

Count me in. The later date is the best for me and wifey. 2013 is my farewell tour with the Fire Service. My cruiser should be even more capable by then(Shooting for the Orion, and Crawlers next!). My wife and I have seen a lot of the USA but that area we have always managed to miss. My kids are able to feed and go to the potty by themselves so thats not an issue:bounce::bounce2::bounce:

Am I gonna have to put up a lottery for spots on the trailer? haha

On a separate note, I'm gonna have to find or build, and mount, some fluid storage containers to carry all my fuel with me; My 275G plastic totes will take up too much room up top. If anyone comes across anything that might mount under the sides of the trailer or has ideas on it, let me know. Gonna need to carry about 1000 gallons extra; maybe 2 500G rectangular tanks or one huge one custom built to go under the trailer between the frame rails. Sid, you know any custom fabricators that could build a baffled tank to my specs? Aluminum preferred but may be too expensive.

I am interested too.
Just keep in mind what kind of wheeling I do - know there's not going to be any mud, and body damage is about 99% likely. What I'm shooting for should make The Cove seem like flat pavement. YouTube some of the trails I've listed. :wrench:

first come first served and who posted first? hmmmmm?

You're an asset to have around for sure... you're great at changing birfs!
