The talk for Monday is starting somewhere along 95, going over the mountains and coming out in the park on 211, then going to Monticello for the night. There are a few ways to do this, depending on the truck mix and weather; From an easy, relatively short run that brings us out near Newspaper rock. Next option is a longer run that starts at Maverick Point, runs Elk Ridge, past Beef Basin and comes out Elephant Hill trail. The most challenging/longest route starts with Hotel Rock, goes though Bluffs Canyon and then connects with Elk Ridge to come out Elephant Hill.
...

I've finally got the waypoints I've collected from last falls Beef Basin trip punched into Google Earth. Looks like they're fairly accurate and match up with the trail, except for the first one at our turnoff from the Elephant Hill trail . Not sure yet how to generate (print) output - when I ask it to make a printable route, it defaults to known roads, and Elephant Hill etc. isn't one of them. Maybe it's time to cough up a subscription to Google Earth Plus?

This is the angel of the Photo I don't have.... Makes explaning what happend a little easier when you can see the step.
...

I sent a full size copy to the shaw.ca addy on your card. Unfortunately I only took one shot as I was bailing out of the truck and it's slightly out of focus.

It's hard to tell from the pic, but the hill leading to that step is pretty steep and the step is actually undercut, so it trapped tires. Most ran it in the center about where Drew is, IIRC at least one had to back down and take a different line. If you compare the step to Drew's tires, it's pretty tall and at the top of a climb, so backing off wasn't pleasant. I wouldn't say a 4+ obstacle, but enough to get your attention!:hillbilly:

Drew wisely went more to the driver's side, but not far enough, caught the step where George's right foot is and was carrying just enough momentum to launch the trailer onto it's roof. He was running the "factory recommended" setup, after the incident he tuned the tire and air bag pressures, with much better results. Mostly a "first time on the trail with a new toy" deal. Drew took it well, easy for me to say, it wasn't my ~4 day old expensive toy!:D

What you also can't see is how it became progressively more off-camber to the left the farther you went left, nor the drop off on that side of the road. After I went that way, Matt got scared and said I'm going up the center (following Bro Rob) and got stuck-ish.

Another interesting shot I don't have was at the bottom of the canyon (in my avatar) where we straddled the little "V" slot, the trailers narrower wheelbase took it right in the slot. This too can be seen in last year's thread near the bottom of page 3.

Hey would like to hook up with you guys. Did top of the world last year with Kevin & Rob. Lorna & I have the yellow fj cruiser & a Horizon trailer. We're located in Sierra Vista & could meet anywhere. If we're not too late let us know. Thanks, Jim

Claudia and I plan on leaving Fountain Hills on Sunday morning to head for Blanding, UT, and meet up with Tools there. Limiting factor for highway travel is my K5, which doesn't like more than 70 or so mph. Anticipated route is PHX/Flagstaff/Tuba City/Kayenta/Monument Valley/Bluff/Blanding.

In the (unlikely) case we get ready early on Saturday, we had considered leaving FH on Saturday afternoon for Flagstaff or so. PM me or DSRTRDR if you're interested in the late Saturday/early Sunday departure timeline, otherwise, Tools is your man.

Your welcome to join up! When do you want to leave, do you make the run up there in one day or two?

Kevin; our schedule is pretty flexible. Typically do the trip in 2 days, but an early start can change that. let me know & we'll work something out. We were scheduled to run elephant hill on thursday, but got a call from Robbie from Rising Sun yesterday asking if I could run cliff hanger instead. The fj trail teams want to organize a run comprised of fj cruisers that day. So... I'll have to be in camp sometime Weds. to get inspected.

My guess is that we will roll out early on the 26th, that's a long/early haul for you! We can meet anywhere including in Blanding. I plan to do registration/tech on Wednesday morning before hitting the trail.

I got the same call from Robbie yesterday - told him I'd do the run if I couldn't get Golden Spike.

On another note - I was wondering, where's Norm in all this? Didn't he say he was coming? The FJ's may outnumber the 80's...

Yes, I'm going but we won't be leaving here until first thing Monday morning. We're hoping to catch up to you guys in Blanding and then doing the Tuesday run with you.

Ditto on the phone call from Robbie. I'm pretty sure I'll do this run as he confirmed I was on Golden Spike for Saturday. :bounce:

So, who is actually planning on leaving Saturday morning? (I am, Tools is, who else?)

We'll leave on Saturday as well, since we're on the border & have a little further to go. Looking forward to it.

jim, it would be nice to see you guys again, are you staying in slickrock again or did you make other arrangements.

btw, I thought you had an adventure trailer. did you trade it in or is horizon the specific model name?

Simon; we're in #179 on the back row. Horizon is the model of AT trailer. The other model is the Chaser. We have reservations for Tuesday through the week. Looking forward to seeing you and a lot of other folks again.

anybody got their trail assignments from CM yet

IIRC we had them earlier last year :frown:

I've got spot #64 at slickrock this year... right in the middle of everything.

I don't have mine yet eather:confused:... guess I will send an email to see what's up.

I'm thinking my trail 'assignments' are going to be:

Hotel Rock on Monday (??)
Lockhart Basin on Tuesday
White Rim/Taylor Canyon on Wednesday
Golden Spike on Thursday (??...if I get picked...)
Flat Iron Mesa on Friday
Dome Plateau on Saturday

I'm still not sure about the "go part of Lockhart on Monday, camp and wait for the others Tuesday" strategy put forward by the :princess:

I've been on most of the Moab trails several times, and want to try something new (to me) this time around.

michael, I may be up for your approach depending on my trail assignments.
