Hey guys,

Just got a 71 BJ with an F engine in it. Took it out on the highway today and I tried to drop into 3rd a little hard - after that the gears wouldn't catch well. The clutch pedal still had pressure and it would get in gear, but it won't move. It's seems to be slipping because it takes a long long time to get up to speed to shift into 2nd and then the same thing happens to get to third. If I punch it the engine revs and the car doesn't move, unless you start really slow so that it gathers some momentum.

What's the deal? I know I busted something on that bad shift....but a little confused on what exactly is the problem.

Thanks,
J

I am having a little trouble understanding what you mean, but if you give it throttle, the engine revs up and the truck doesn't move, then the clutch is slipping. Either it needs adjustment or it needs replacement. Check the adjustment before you replace it.

x2 i think when you tried to shift in 3rd "kinda hard" is when your clutch set up gave

x3 on the slipping clutch

Yeah, i figured that. I had to ride it for another hour to get to a mechanic - no burning smell or anything which I was expecting actually. But, like I said kept slipping.

Where, would the adjustment be? Haven't messed with the clutch much before. Thinking of having it rebuilt for 100 bucks.

Adjust first. Pay for rebuild only if needed. The adjustment is done at the slave cylinder.

Had to have it rebuilt since I was so far away from home. But all in all it cost about US$120... Turns out a seal busted in there and there was oil all over the clutch and that's why it was slipping. Had new shoes installed since it was open anyway, though.

Who'd a thunkit...

Probably clutch disc...or shoes

$120 clutch job?? Holy ****.

Yes, write that one down in the record books. Most of the time it would cost more than that just in parts. Now for the rest of the story..........?

$120 clutch job?? Holy s***.

Here that would only get the truck on the hoist and the inspection cover removed to tell you what's wrong.:crybaby:

THe last new 40 clutch I bought was $500 just for the disc, pressure plate, and bearing.:frown: Not including labour!

He is in the DR though... could make a big difference.

So here's the story: Transmission seal tore open and the oil was all around the shaft where the clutch shoes make contact. So, it was all working, except there was no friction to get the car moving. Ended up removing the transmission and clutch pump to do a full clean up and replace the seal in the transmission and around the clutch cylinder in the pump. Total materials: $80. Total labor: $120. I should consider myself lucky I guess - and yes, the DR has everything to do with that.

On a side note I busted a hard brake line this morning and am still working on that one. But, a mechanic walked by and said for about $10 he would take the line off, have it remade, remount, and bleed all the lines. I decided to give it a go myself though....

PS - sorry if I'm naming parts wrong....still in learning mode.

No worries... We all started somewhere.

Wish I could get work done for anything near those prices... I'd drop a grand into my truck and be done:clap:
