It appears that the clutch is going out on Zeke. I haven't even started to troubleshoot except to verify the fluid is full at the master cylinder. I'm hearing a shoop shoop sound from the back of the engine in neutral and with the clutch depressed and a light grind when putting it in 1st or reverse. Any suggestions before I start tearing into It?

X2. perhaps the worst simple fix on these things is anything in the bellhousing... make sure you don't need to go in, before you go in...
 
I've looked at it, and it might be that leaking engine oil is getting into the clutch cover plate, which is barely held on with two bolts. I imagine this doesn't help with clutch engagement a bit, since oily clutches are Not Good.

I've also found the clutch release and will dink with that tomorrow, IAW the FSM.
 
Welp, I learned a ton about my rig. I adjusted the clutch to where I only get a very light grind shifting to reverse. Problem is, I "think" I can feel the pressure plate slipping at that point. No "shoop, shoop" though.

I'll play around with it some more, but I'm wondering how long this clutch will hold out.

I looked into the bellhousing, and there is a LOT of oil in there. I'm wondering how much of that slippage is oil related.
 
The "shoop shoop" may be your throwout bearing. with the lower flywheel cover off you can look up at it and see if the two little springy clips are holding the throwout bearing holder to the clutch fork as they should. if the clutch is slipping, you may have adjusted the clutch slave pushrod out too far.

I've owned my Pig a while now, 30 plus years, I've never worn out a clutch. I've only replaced them when it was convenient, new engines etc.

try cleaning up that flywheel cover so there's no oil on it, maybe clean off the back of the block and all you can see with brakleen or something similar, put the cover back on a drive a while. re-assess the amount of oil in the pan regularly (monthly?). you may be looking at needing a new rear oil seal, which means separating engine and transmission...which would be a convenient time to replace a clutch disc and throwout bearing.

Oh, in case you did not know, you CAN drive without a clutch.
 
Yes, to driving without clutch, but grinding to get to reverse is slightly embarrassing.

I've adjusted the slip out of it, and can pop it into reverse, with a vigorous motion which eliminates the grind, but I do know it is there.

Will continue to drive it and monitor as you say, until I can get everything done at once.
 
I've heard that some people find that shifting into reverse from another gear (say first gear) is easier than shifting into reverse from neutral...

I need to do this for this first little bit when it’s cold outside, I’m guessing it has something to do with temperature because once it warms up it goes away and shifting is normal.
 
Found the oil problem.

My oil pan was falling off. Only 3 of the bolts were more than finger tight.

Would explain why oil loss was going up during the last few gas fills. I have been criticized for checking my oil level every time I fill at the gas station; even by Mudders.

There is a benefit to being raised around 19th Century machinery. You gain a good appreciation of lubrication. I hosed everything down with brakleen after I tightened the bolts.

Clutch works, but I think my pressure plate has the occasional slip that shouldn't be there. Pry needs resurfaced and a new clutch down the road.

Roughly paraphrased from the FSM: To replace the clutch, first remove the transmission and the transaxle.

Ugh. That's fun to do in an unheated garage, in Iowa, in the winter.

And I know what you mean about checking the oil. Everytime I do an oil & filter change, I am always checking after I park on level ground. The :princess: is like WTF?!?

FSM should say you need to remove txfr case & tranny for clutch...

I've had women a couple of times come up to me looking all concerned and offering to call AAA, because I had my hood up at the pumps.

I guess to them, every time they opened the hood, it was while waiting for a tow.
